Hi All,
First-time poster here with a couple questions I'm hoping you can help me with.
My husband has hair that's about shoulder-blade length. It is very fine with natural loose curls.
1) I'd like to find some useful/masculine/fun accessories that can help keep his hair tidy. Do you have any ideas + websites where I can find such things? I'm relatively craft-y so I can potentially also whip up stuff. I've looked at some of the celtic ponytail holders, anything else?
2) Are there any good hair styles/cuts for men with long hair? Can anyone recommend good product to give body to the top of the head since LH otherwise makes it bottom heavy? While LH can be wonderful, the Cousin It look and pony tail both get pretty old fast.
Thanks in advance,
Ashley
Just Curious what's your husbands thoughts on his hair? What are his likes and dislikes and or preferences?
We get a fair amount of posts about wives wanting to alter their husbands appearance slightly or in some cases majorly. We're glad
you at least don't want him to cut it short. But I wonder what's his opinion of his appearance.
To answer your question the best I can, other than Celtic styled hair ties there isn't much that we do to out hair to keep it tidy yet look masculine. However boring the ponytail may be it's practical and for some preferred.
Here's a link from our links section showing the Celtic stuff.

Hi Kevin,
Ha, I shouldn't be surprised that many wives might ask similar questions. As you have guessed, I'm not as enamored by the long hair but this doesn't mean that I don't want the husband to be happy and enjoy it.
We've had discussions so I believe he and I are on the same page re: ponytails and the necessity of minimizing the Cousin It look. Ponytails can also also cause hair breakage which is another good reason to mix it up a bit.
Thanks for the celtic link. I'm also thinking maybe some bandanas/kerchief doohickees, but is that too Axl Rose? What designs/fabrics would be cool? Since he's an old-school hacker-geek I'm thinking maybe a UNIX or vidgame pixel graphic might be fun...?
Open to other fun ideas too and thanks again!
Well, that's not a big selection is it?
I only wear a tail at work or in the presence of certain "hair nazi" types (when I need to compromise with them).
Wearing it in a tail can also train it to grow back over the head thus avoiding the "cousin it' look.
There really is a lot you can do with it, let it hang naturally, single ponytail on the side, braided, parted on one side with hair hanging halfway across the face, skateboarder hair, tease it into a big fro, spike it with jell into a giant mohawk and of course the Willie Nelson twin braids!
Good Luck,
Paul
Hi LHwife,
In my opinion, the only thing that gets "old" real fast is SHORT hair, --- you see it EVERYWHERE (yawwwwn...)....
Braids, buns, multiple hair-ties, "pull-tab" ponytails, ponytails coming out of baseball caps, wearing bandanas (see Bill Choisser's site, checking out the Links section), half-tails... The list goes on & on!
An easy way to guarnatee that your hubby looks 100% masculine is: just have him grow a beard!! (After all, how many truly bearded women do you know? - lol)....
Many cities have summer "street fairs", --- even small towns do nowadays. You can usually find clever and original arts & crafts stuff there, including I have a few masculine-looking wooden hair sticks that I bought up in Oregon one year while visiting my nieces, --- who are the ones who ENCOURAGED me to buy those items!
I used to worry about putting my hair up in a bun, that I would look stupid or too "fem".... In Northern California, it is not uncommon to see longhaired guys having their hair back in a bun, --- and it definitely does NOT look feminine!! And, most surprising of all.... I've gained courage in discovering that it's mostly the STRAIGHT men who have no fear of doing their hair up in this practical sort of manner (just because I happen to be gay, doesn't mean I want to LOOK "gay" - lol)!!
I'll include a few pics. If it gets to be too many, I'll start a new thread on the topic...
Take care, --- and good luck!

Hi again,
Here's a more recent example of what my bun looks like, as seen from the back (my hair being longer now than when the previous bun pic was taken)...

There are many different types of braids that can be done. Here's a pic of the back of my head with just a standard braid...

Here's another example of what can be done as my hair got past shoulder-blade length...

Hmm, the bun and segmented ponytail look like fun variations. His hair is pretty fine so the ponytail doesn't have a lot of heft but I'll share these ideas with him.
What I especially like is how you comb your hair straight back in this picture. I think a lot of how any kind of tieback looks is in how you comb it away from your face. Hubby is still working on that skill ;-)
LOL
Hi Ken,
I'm glad you're posting again. This line below is the funniest thing I've read in a while! :-)
"just because I happen to be gay, doesn't mean I want to LOOK "gay" - lol!!"
Whatever he elects to do, scissors and cutting are seriously bad news and apart from any attention to the ends, if needed, after 2/3 years growth are to be avoided.
Ha. Yes I tried to interest him in cutting a few inchs to get rid of all the damage and he was not interested in the least. But he did allow me to trim about an inch and what a difference just that amount made! So much healthier and more body down there at the end.
Instead of tailing it he can also try other styles, like braids or an halftail. Expirement a lot and find you he likes best.
I might be wrong but i believe there used to be a link to this website 'http://www.nwtreasuretrove.com/' (& I seem to recall a page with some photos of a former hyperboard members wearing some of the items?) on the links page of the old 'the-light.com' domain. They sell a fantastic range of hair accessories suitable for men (all of which I believe are handmade). I purchased some items quite some time ago and recently made a nother purchase just last week...

Thanks for the link Mogh, I'll check out the products here.
