I have been a lurker for a while here and enjoy the site very much. I am in the process of growing my hair to about shoulder length and about halfway there. My last haircut was in May. I haven't seen my parents in a while, until Thanksgiving. My Dad is old school and couldn't resist telling me I need a haircut and "jokingly" said I look like a "hollywood homo". First I said that most gay people have short hair and second I said "you mean like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt...why would I want to look like them?" ;)
EXCELLENT reply to your dad there, TK, --- and as a gay man myself, I concur 100% with your comment that "most gay people have short hair"; because most gay men are attracted to stereotypical symbols of masculinity, like: short hair!.... (Read my reply I made to user Paul earlier below, if interested in hearing more comments about this topic...)
Being a minority within a minority can feel a little odd at times; but, whether strait or gay, you have to follow your heart. For most guys, one's choice of hair length and/or style is more of a self-identity issue, than it is a sexuality one.
Be careful of using Tom Cruise as an example of a "strait" man, BTW. He repeatedly has been accused of living a very closeted gay life, covering his tracks by outwardly getting married, etc., etc.... Personally, I don't care one hoot if he is or he isn't; but, according to apparently MANY sources "in the know" in Hollywood, he is well-known as hiding his homo-ness, sticking wih his cover story due to early contracts he made years ago within the Biz.
Brad Pitt, on the other hand, seems to be 100 % strait , --- just in case you still want to use ANYONE from Hollywood as an example of a longhair for your father to look up to (lol)!!

It's kind of funny--the '60s actually seem to have done a lot of that work. The gay community seems to have collectively concluded that the idea of celebrating one's feminine side (like wearing long hair) had *cooties* now that straight men were doing it and decided they *didn't want to be constricted by a stereotype* or something. I mean, I'm in the same position. Something tells me bisexuals (ahem) are more into the "femme" stereotype than gays are.

Had a similar incident with my Dad last year when he visited for my son's wedding. He took one look at my hair and said "You are going to cut that before the wedding aren't you?". I simply said, "No", and that was that.
Not the old haircut before the wedding routine another one of those old fav pre wedding favs lol!
Cheers,
