I've been wanting to ask this questions for a while, so here goes. Are there folks here who have had head injuries or injuries to the scalp? I have noticed that as my hair is getting longer, the area on my left side where my biggest scalp injury was, the texture of the hair is different than that on the right side.
Best I can describe it, on the left in that injuried area it's a bit kinky curly and on my right side it's longish waves. Most of my hair is long waves with a slight curl at the ends. My hair is also about and inch shorter on the left side compared to the right side also.
This head/scalp injury was 30 yrs. ago.
Do hair follicles get damaged, and if so, are they reprogrammed to grow hair a different way?
This somewhat problem has NOT made me want to cut/trim, just going to let it play out and see where it takes me.
Thanks,
Frank
Frank,
From personal experience I can say that, yes, hair after an injury/ infection/ chemical bath/ etc. can be "reprogrammed" to grow in differently.
When I was born, premature at 7 months, I came out with a full head of very thick, very black, straight hair (like my father) But being born too soon, I was pumped full of medications, one of which, after my arms and legs were full of needles, was placed in my head (where, incidentally, no hair continues to grow, thankfully it's a small spot and is covered by a slight movement of my part). This being the case, the doctors shaved my head to allow for more needles if the need arose. After this was done, my hair came back in, promptly, as lighter brown/ red and wavy, as it remains today.
So it seems to me that, yes, injury of a dramatic fashion can change the hair follicles and, as a result, change the appearance of the hair.

Hi Austin, man, what a rough way to start life. From your pics, your hair doesn't seem to have any problems. Thank for sharing your Miracle into this life. We'll wait and see what these little hair follicles product in another year.
All the best to you Austin.

I've known several people with scars of some form on their scalps with the hair in that area growing in white. If by chance the scar is in the "right" place, the resulting white streak can actually make for an interesting look. (Not that I'm advocating scarring your scalp for cosmetic reasons, lol)
Also, I know my father originally had reddish-brown hair, but as a child developed an illness that caused his hair to fall out. When it grew back in it was black. Later in life, when his facial hair started coming in, it was still a dark reddish-brown.

Hi Jim, I haven't noticed any color change in the area where my injury was, just the texture of the hair. Trying to imagine a white patch of hair, on the left side of my head. If I was in my twenties again, maybe start a new trend. :)
Thanks for the reply.

I have a small area where hair is missing at my temple. It is right where you would expect for male pattern baldness, but that isn't what it is. It's only on one side, and it's where I was attacked by a random (insane) stranger on the street, who gave me repeated 'rabbit punches' over and over again to that one spot. Not much hair ever grew back there. The only thing I can add is that the police were worse than useless. This was a long time ago.
