i have hard water and you can really see and feel the difference when washing in soft water but i do not have a water conditioner so i was going to buy a shampoo from Sallys beauty salon called"Ion hard water shampoo", it says it takes out the minerals that build up but do you think it will actully work or heard of anyone using a simular product?
i could also try a clarifying shampoo like suave or a deep cleansing shampoo. i was reading up about acetic acid,it says thats in these shampoos but when i look at the ingredients i dont see it listed. also another question, back when we didnt have water softners, did everyone wash their hair in hard water? if so how did the cope with it?
Hardness or softness of water varies from town to town, and mainly has to do with the local water treatment techniques (or quality of well water if a property isn't connected to a water line). For instance, I am currently at college here in Indiana, and the water in my town is absolutely horrible thanks to the amount of chemicals that are placed in the water supply. It also makes the water taste disgusting. However, at my father's house about 70 miles away, there is a water softener, as his property relies on well water. My hair is always much healthier there. Same goes for when I'm back home in Colorado... MUCH better water.
My advice is to look into a clarifying shampoo. I use one while here at college, just to counteract all the chemicals in our tap water. Otherwise, I can get away without shampooing much back in Colorado.
Hope that helps. =)

im pretty sure these filters only take out chlorine and dirt and doesnt do anything for calcium and iron etc. i asked the guy at home depot about it.
That link claims that they take out calcium and magnesium. That's generally what water softeners remove.
I know what you mean I have a water conditioner and it's great for my hair. Now when I visit my mother who has hard water I tend to use metric tons of conditioner. Although as James said you may try a clarifying shampoo see how that works.
