hey guys! 2nd post here. the thing that really really bothers me about growing out my hair are the sideburns. they seem to stick out whenever i have my hair long enough in my case since my hair doesn't crop towards my face but fall straight. do you guys not shave the whole side area of your face when growing hair out? i'm going to the barber tom to have my sideburns shaved off. i go to a salon and hopefully that will be the last time next year i visit any of those places. =)
A razor is inded the best way to deal with erant sideburns. However I would do it your slef as the problem will recur.
Since I also have a goatee and mustache, I own a mustache trimmer with a beard-trimming attachment. I use the trimmer to maintain my sideburns. I trim them to stay just below the base of the skullbone that runs perpendicular to my ears (I'm sure that bone has a name, I just don't know it).
Sideburns are easy enough to maintain. Use a facial feature that is symmetrical in most people (bottom of ears, level with the ear hole, whatever) and line it up on each side with the same razor you'd shave with. To ensure consistency in thickness, use a cheap comb (little black ones) as a depth gauge and 'shave' the hairs that stick through the teeth. (Thicker combs = thicker sideburns.)
Best of luck!

A few years ago I heard about a product called "Perfect Sideburns" by Prolook. I could never get my sideburns the same length or looking the same, especially since I like them a bit longer than normal and there's nothing to match them up with (like the ear lobe, which is higher). But this product lets me quickly get great looking sideburns that I could have only gotten from a hair salon.
The product is made up of something like frames for glasses, but only to snap on the "shields" on the sides of the arms. You can trim the shields to on an angle (like I did - don't worry, the other end will still be straight).
Here's a link to the web page with some good photos:

As for maintaining the thickness of the sideburns, I use a beard trimmer on the #7 setting. You could probably use hair clippers too. This ensures a nice, even salon quality look. I like to "touch up" my sideburns once every week or two to keep them looking good.
