Alright, i'm a new user, and I don't know if this is really an alright question to be asking. If it's not, just forget it.
I have long and curly hair that is often frizzy. I usually part it on the left side of my head, where for some reason the left side is moderately straight and the right side has a lot more curl than it should. Parting it in the middle ends up usually with excess frizz for some reason. I have tried some gel in it, and that seems to somewhat work, but it also takes my already very coarse hair and makes it worse.
My question is, is there any specific styles I could apply to my hair and any way to soften it?
By the way, I am fifteen.
Hey bro, that hair looks awesome just the way it is! I would kill for that look!
Not having curly hair myself (just a bit wavy) I'll let someone else tackle that part of your question. But there are LOTS of different kinds of shampoos and conditioners available for just about every type of hair and/or condition. Just go to a good pharmancy/drug store, etc.
Do you every tie your hair back in a ponytail or a half-tail? I think that would look good and make it more manageable.
The picture is of me, with gel in my hair. I find that it helps define the curl and make it shine, but I also have a problem due to tangles and lack of conditioner.
I'll take that oil advice to heart.
My main problem is mostly due to prices of many hair products, although that will change due to the fact I have just gotten a job.
I occasionally put my hair in a ponytail, and it doesn't look too bad like that, I find. The only real problem is that tying it back partially straightens it, which although most people would consider a good thing, I find that the semi-wave that is created looks really terrible, and i'd much prefer to define the curls rather than straighten them.
I typically do not use gel or mousse. Some of them can be potentially damaging to hair, at least that's what I hear (for one, many contain alcohol which I think dries the hair). As for shampoo and conditioner, I usually buy the good quality stuff from a salon. True, they are a bit more expensive, but they're supposed to be better quality. Lately I've started buying the higher end shampoo & conditioner from drugstores. It may seem like a lot to pay anywhere between $7 and $20 for a single bottle, but it lasts a long time and after all, it's for the sake of your hair! ;)
I've seen a lot of guys with curly hair tie it back into a ponytail. Like you said, it partially straightens the hair and leaves it a bit wavy where pulled back. As far as I know, there's not much you can do about that. Personally, I think it looks OK. If my hair were like that, I wouldn't mind that. Sometimes it's just really convenient to tie your hair back so it doesn't get in the way when you're working. I didn't like the look of my hair in a ponytail either, but I've gotten used to it. Although given the choice, I'd wear it down whenever possible.
Your hair looks awesome, btw! You've got the hair I've always wanted. Everyone will have their own opinion, but the way you're styling it now looks great (even without gel). I think you should give the ponytail another chance. You could try a half-tail, but I think a full (low) ponytail would look best on you. Good luck & Happy New Year!
On my best day, my hair doesn't look that good. You could rub a drop of jojoba oil into the ends after you shower to help the dry. Other than that - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Try some conditioners, especially leave-in ones. My hair is similar to yours and conditioners make a WORLD of difference. If you can, go to a hair salon to pick products to try- grocery-store stuff, in my experience, is generally not as good.
I wouldn't give up on gel, a little can be very effective in cutting frizz.
Don't know if you're having a good or bad hair day in your pic, but it actually doesn't look so bad.

-Well, in comparison to my bad hair days, it looks good. ;)
Welcome Alex,
It's a perfectly alright question.
I have similar hair and recently started wearing it parted on one side and I know exactly what you mean. One side just poofs out there!
I use a little gel to manage it sometimes. I also use Infusium 23, you might try that.
Personally I think your hair looks great. If this pic is a "bad hair" day for you then I'm sure a lot of people are very jealous.
Glad to have you here,
Paul
style? manage? Let it fly!
If you're uncomfortable with tangles and stuff though; then you've come to the right place for tips.
Welcome Alex !
And you certainly have come to the right place with the right questions. Browse through the users directory to see some of the other curly heads and how they style their locks. As others have said, your hair really does looks great, but I can imagine that wind and humidity really play havoc with it. Jojoba is what works best for my fine textured and thining hair.
Keep us posted.
WWT (Walter White Tail)
Sure, its a perfectly alright question and great to see you here.
Your long hair looks spledid to myself just the way it is. White Tail has given you good advice however and I would surely explore it.
Hi and welcome!!! I also have curly frizzy hair and have found
that a feww drops of jojoba oil or coconut oil or africa's best
herbal oil (they are all similar) rubbed into my hair helps
alot.
First of all, your hair looks awesome.
Secondly, what kind of hair products do you use?
I don't have curly hair, ony somewhat wavy, but I know that if I use shampoos that are too rough or don't use enough conditioner, my hair becomes really dry and it tangles easier.
During the recent few weeks I have started to experiment with CWC (Condition - Wash - Condition)
It basically means that when I first go to the shower I thoroughly rinse my hair, then I apply conditioner to my lenghts, not on the scalp, than without rinsing the conditioner out I put in some shampoo on my scalp and scrub it in until it's foamy, then I rinse the shampoo and conditioner off, and put in some conditioner in my hair for the last time, let it be there for a couple of minutes and then I rinse it away.
I have found that my hair has become more softer and shinier after I started the CWC routine.
Many people also use the CO (Condition Only) Where you ony use conditioner, and use it like you would use a shampoo, meaning that you'd scrub it in your scalp and distribute it all the way to your hair.
It doesn't suit us all, but couldn't hurt to try.
The product i'm using at the moment is Finesse regular shampoo, but as a said in another reply it's more of a price issue. I don't have conditioner at the moment, and that's a lot of the problem, I think.
I have used CWC before (although I never knew there was a name for it), and I think it works really well, but i've been having trouble determining what sort of conditioners and shampoo I need. I've thought about getting maybe moisturizing shampoos and conditioners but once again price is an issue.
Another question, what companies/brands would you suggest?
