Since I am new on this board and 2009 is a year with no haircut and for me. The year where I have to become a really longhair. I have never been a longhair (my record is 5 months without haircut), so this year must be happy growing year. I wish everybody here a happy New Year, a lot of success with your long hair and hair growth process, nice ponytails and wonderful shoulder lenghts and midback lengths. Thanks in advance to all of you for the support in my long hair efforts!
I too will be making a resolution to not cut my hair anytime soon. I grew it out for 13 months in 2006/7 but eventually cut it due to my girlfriends constant nagging. She thought it looked bad on me and wasn't shy about telling me that. This board has always been a place where I could come and get support (even though i've never posted before, i've lurked for a long time).
I recently broke up with said girlfriend (was my fiance at the time) and I now don't have to listen to her nagging me about my hair. I'm really eager to get rid of this crew cut, and start living MY life the way I want to.
Happy New Year to all!

It's really hard to grow your hair out when people close to us aren't supportive about it. Luckily for me, most of my friends bugged me about it only for a short time (mostly during the awkward phase when, I agree, my hair looked bad). My father never really said anything. My mother made the odd comment but eventually stopped once I could tie all of my hair back in a ponytail. One of my friends thought it was great that I was growing my hair out.
But... another close friend did not like me growing my hair out. She has short hair herself and it's obviously that short hair is her preferred hairstyle for both men and women. To this day, she takes every opportunity to tell me how awful my hair looks (too thin, doesn't suit me, etc) and tells me I should cut it. She often jokes that she will cut it for me.
The good news is that most other people are indifferent about it, or like it (once it's past the awkward phase). And best of all, you'll get plenty of support and encouragement on this board where everybody else shares your enthusiasm for long hair. There may be certain hairstyles that don't suit everyone, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone who didn't look good with long hair.
