A while ago I had a lecture that raised certain questions. The lecturer said that it is illegal for schools and other facilities to manipulate personal appearance (apart from the dress code in certain schools that limit your wardrobe to the same trousers and shirts for your entire stay). I tried to find written laws/ human rights but I didnt find any. When I later asked a teacher that used to teach me in my previous school, he said that hair ties in with the dress code and one must abide by that as the school is a separate institution that can hold its own rules.
Can anyone make this clearer, please?
Hi Esoterik,
I have done some research because my son's school has a stupid haircut policy and here's what the ACLU says, this is all I have been able to find. I am going to contact them in a few days to find out more.
This is close to the bottom of the page.
"Can my school dictate my appearance?
It depends on what state you live in. In some states, students can wear their hair any way they want as long as it's not a safety hazard (if your hair is very long, you have to tie it back during a science experiment). Courts in other states allow school hair codes - and where hair codes are permitted, so are dress codes. For more information, please read our position paper on "Freedom of Expression." You can also check with your local ACLU affiliate about the laws in your state."
So, apparently it's up to the state. I would really like to contact this lecturer. Tell me more about him/her please.
Hope this helped,
Paul
Well, the thing is that I live in Malta, an island in the middle of the Mediterranean. My lecturer teaches me systems of knowledge. Schools here almost all have uniforms (uniforms stop at post secondary schools). I will surely ask him more on the subject and post anything interesting. Hopefully well start a revolution down here :] .
Yeah, let's make it world wide.
Paul
I am taking this very seriously, you know. In my opinion its up to us longhairs, and encouraging more and more people to grow out their hair. Theres power in numbers. Ill be sure to research the European and Maltese laws and such (with posts to follow :] ).
