Hi guys, love your board. However, as of recently I've been coming face to face with a problem in my life. I am currently 23 years old and find myself wondering how much longer can I keep my hair long??? Over the course of the last few years I find my hair getting shorter and shorter. I'm trying to find out how some of you who are getting into the older crowd keep their long hair into their 30 and so on. I mean what professions do you guys have? Also how long do you have your hair.
Web and Graphic Designer. Marketing, and other things. Work for my slef and a large agency for many years. I am also an elected official and have hair to my mid back. Best of luck to you!
I just turned 35 and didn't have long hair until 4-5 years ago (excepting college). I am a librarian (and a department head), but have had no problems. The large system I work in is a professional environment, but also likely 75% or more of staff are liberal...
Anyway, I always keep my hair in a bun at work (well, I am a librarian!), but it is mid to lower backer when let down.
Good luck!
Hi Jamie,
At 47 I believe I might qualify for the "older crowd". My hair is about 3 inches longer now than my avatar. (That pic is about 5 years old I think, but I haven't changed much.) I'm going to try to find out what my terminal length is.
I work in construction so I've had very few problems with hair rules at work. I plan to wear my hair long until I die, simply put.
I have had some thinning but other than that it's doing ok. I really don't understand why you think you may not keep your hair much longer. Is it because of your profession? If it is, I say stick to your guns, that's what we need. If more people refused to chop off their hair just cause their boss said so, long hair may return to mainstream.
It seems to me that the older you get the less crap you get about your hair. Most here I think will agree with that.
Good luck,
Paul
I started growing my hair out at 51 years. I'm now 56 with hair that goes [some of the longest hairs] a little past my belt. Sometimes I think the growth is slowing down a bit until I realized that I'm getting hair caught in places where it never did before, ie. seatbelts, etc. Here's the latest pic, taken on January 1st. I'm a pipe organ technician and jazz musician on the weekends. My method of growing my hair long... no cuts, no trims.

Hi Jamie2,
Welcome to the hyperborad, and I am glad that you have found us! Hopefully, you can find a career where long hair is not an issue. I am 55, and recently retired from a government job as a chemist, and had no problems at all with my long hair. There are quite a few other guys on the hyperboard past the age of 50 who also have long hair, going to show that long hair is for everyone! It has been ages since I have been 23!
Best of luck, and keep it growing!
David
I didn't start growing till I was 52. Before that I had a #2 buzz cut for most of my life. I'm now 65, and recently retired from the computer electronics industry. My hair has reached its terminal length. I'm comfortable with it. Its length is just to the nipples on my chest in front, and just at about mid-back in back. Good luck in growing your hair.
People have said that I look younger with long hair and it suits me better than short so I am happy with that. In my profession it isn't a problem as I am a graphic designer.

Although I'm frequently in age-denial (I still think I'm 23 years old myself, for example, --- until I look in the mirror, that is - LOL), I have no interest in letting my age tell me I "should" cut my hair shorter now (I'm 55, by the way). When still wet, my hair reaches an inch or so past my belt in back... and, if genetics permit me to continue on down further that that, you'd better believe I sure as hell want it even looooooonger!!!!
As far as what I do for a living, I manage and supervise a kitchen (and also cook there, along with other cooks on staff) at a small nursing care facitlity where we try to use all fresh ingredients in our food preparations. I consider myself pretty lucky, in that I have a GREAT boss (who was a longhair himself when he was younger), as well as have a wonderful staff that pretty much all get along. When I was younger, I worked in some restaurants that were total hell holes; but, it doesn't "have to be" that way. I graduated from a local cooking school in '83, which definitely helped me get to where I am today.
I also do as side work some occasional gardening jobs. I did gardening and professional landcsaping for a total of 15 years as my main profession (from about 91 - '06), and still have a few garden maintainance clients that I take care of, --- specifically, mostly clients with rose gardens (my specialty being pruning and caring for rose gardens in a toxic-free manner).
Hope that hels! And now onto hobbling and limping on down to my wheelchair (lol)....

41 years old here, and been growing out for just over a year. My hair is about to my shoulders. I work in local government in a management position. For what it's worth I just had my annual evaluation the other day and not a word was uttered about my hair length.

Hi Jamie and welcome to the board!
No hair/age troubles here (knocking on wood).
Just take good care of your self. There is the saying: "Take good care of your body the first 50 years, and it will take care of you the next 50"
My hair is to my lower back and getting near waist-length
Electronics and software engineering is what I do for a living.
Live long and live long-haired!

Hi Scott, and nice to hear from the others below who said "hi". After three months away to get out of the habit of hanging out here, I may now drop in from time to time, but not often.
Happy New Year to all!
Bill
I am as old as the mountains acording to my nieces and nephew. In Adult speak, that wold be 47. My hair is mid to lower back and my beard is 3 inches past my nips. As for occupation I am an actor. I can currently be seen as a Viking on two new Capital One commercials.

I saw that ad on youtube. I am guessing you are the guy with the helmet with horns. That is one nice beard, just lovely. I wish mine would grow that long.

51 here, and I work in a law firm as a patent agent. My hair is down to my waist (barely) and I think it's still growing (slowly). I can hardly remember the last time anyone (except my mother, 79) complained about the length of my hair.
What did you say the problem was?
Welcome Jaime2, I have posted this image before, but it is unlikely that you have seen it. I beg the patience of our regulars here who have seen it several times in the past year. I am one month shy of 56 and have the second or possibly third longest hair of any of the guys here.
Hair length is affected by genetics and testosterone levels. I got my mother's hair genes and I have a somewhat low testosterone count. It is 432. The range is 299 to 999 so I am at the lower end of the scale.
Hair length can decline with age, but at 23, that seems a bit young. Make sure you are eating a healthy diet and are in good health.
Scott
Thigh length, and I work as a historic streetcar motorman for the City of San Francisco. It is usually bunned at work, but not always.
PS: I'm 43
I am right at 44. I have driven a truck nearly all of my adult life. I do a very good job and have developed an excellent personality and those qualities go a long way in the workplace. I know some companies would not tolerate my hair, but it would really be their loss and not mine. Just being honest here. Besides, I wouldn't care to work for a company that discriminates on the basis of hair length.
jeffrey.
Jamie, 56 and still "growing" strong!
Really think it depends on ones genetic makeup.
peace, jonalbear
