Hey everybody! I had an awesome birthday yesterday, and now I'm following thru with my photo update. You can see my hair texture a lot better -- really really thick and wavy. Also, it shows why I will eventually need a trim -- there is a big length disparity between front and back, and the sides are a little lopsided. I haven't gotten that trim yet however; it doesn't seem that essential right now. =)
My biggest challenge in hairstyling has been dealing with fuzzy, fly-away hair. My hair is quite thick and healthy, but it also tends to be on the dry side and gets frizzy, regardless of moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. Anyway, I've started using jojoba oil, and it's made a tremendous difference. I find it works best if I work a few drops into damp hair from the front and a few more drops from the back. Then I part it and work a bit more into my hair part. Usually this will be adequate to keep my hair smooth and shiny for a few days until I wash again. If I let my hair dry before I put in the oil, I have to use a lot more and within a day or two my hair looks greasy and lank. I theorize that damp hair distributes it more evenly and the natural evaporation process encourages it to lay better.
Jojoba oil has also made a tremendous difference with my skin, not just my hair. I'm very sensitive to hair products -- chemically and aromatically, but jojoba oil really suits my skin, makes a great moisturizer and seems to be improving my acne issues. I'm pretty happy to have found a healthy, natural product that works really well! I used to use "100% Aloe Vera" gel -- which actually contains a lot of chemical additives -- but I've stopped, since it seems to build up and give me dandruff-like symptoms.
I'd better get out into another snowy Minneapolis day. =)
Thanks for reading,
Wakazed
Happy birthday! It's good that you've started using jojoba oil. Isn't that stuff awesome? As for the trim, don't worry about it yet. The uneven length between front and back really doesn't matter much as your hair gets longer. The only thing that it will affect is the ability to tie all of your hair into a ponytail for some time. Once you get to the 2 or 2.5 year mark, then a trim is more proper.
Best of luck in that cold Minnesota weather. Most of my family is from that part of the country... =)

I just can't rave enough about jojoba oil! The golden elixir! I can't say I'm entirely convinced to not get a trim. I don't think anyone can reconcile me to having a mullet, and I'd really rather it grew at a more even rate, especially as I near the ponytail stage. Also, fresh ends speak volumes about my intents to achieve healthy, cared-for hair. However, due to lack of funds, I'm content enough with it for now.
Regardless, I respect everyone's input, and I'll keep on with the updates!
Just a note to be careful if you trim. I had the exact same idea of avoiding a mullet-like appearance. I had a friend cut off about an inch across the back, and ended up with a sort of bobbed hair appearance. It's the only trim I've regretted.
Totally agree about the jojoba oil, by the way. Awesome stuff!!
i am in the awkward stage, however I have found Garnier surfer wax an excellent product for hair styling. It would work well on your style.
Hey your hair looks wonderful!
Cheers,
Peter
Hey, Wakazed. Happy belated birthday. It's always good to know that there is a fellow Capricorn here (My bd was 1/8). Your hair is looking great. Keep it growin' and flowin'.
BTW, it's supposed to turn really cold down here in San Antonio, TX tonight (35 degrees). Brrrr!

Hi,
congratulations and happy birthday afterwards. what I really admire about your hair is this outstanding "golden shine". almost "angel-like" - incredible!
this pic was done indoors, I presume. the full glory of your golden mane may appear even better in sunshine, I think. maybe one day you are able to post an outdoor update. that surely would create an incredible good look - even better than this one.
best regards from germany (oh yeah, its very cold here, too)

Thanks for the compliments! Indeed, my hair does certainly have a blonde radiance. And the best part is that it's totally natural! I work out-of-doors during the summer, and it bleaches beautifully (sometimes I help it along with a little lemon juice). Actually, you can see the color separation in my hair growth since summer. I can't wait until the seasons change and I'm outside with my new lengths.
And I'll get an outdoor photo posted as soon as I can!
Happy Birthday Wakazed!I guess a bit belated but better late than never.LOL.
Your pic looks fantastic as you have very cool looking hair.I'd hold off for quite some time before considering a trim as doing it at this point will only delay your longhaired journey.Sounds like you've got your product routine figured out and I too can't praise jojoba oil enough either.Just don't overdo it as only very little is needed.Anyway I hope your journey goes well for you and that you achieve your goal:)Take care my friend.Cheers
Mark
Your hair looks great, your routine seems to work.
A trim is not nessesary, look at my update that growing without one single trim. The long hair just blends in with the short hair.
My ponytail is thick at the base and narrows down to the end because of this.
It's your own choise of course but hair can do a lot on it's own, at first I was planning a trim too but I learned on this board you don't need one.
Howdy Mr. Wakazed,
Your hair looks hands-down TERRIFIC!!! You also had a very nice intro. to yourself in the previous post you made below, which I very much enjoyed reading. You are extremely articulate! You said many things in there that I'm sure many of us can relate to, --- at least I can say so, that is! Funny how longhairs so instictively know within their hearts that they are indeed meant to be a longhair, --- even if quite an uphill battle with parents and/or others around us who don't understand why we aren't happy with having our hair kept short...
As far as the question re. considering having a trim goes, personally I don't see any need for you to have to do that anytime soon, --- your hair looks too dog-gone good!!!
If you have the chance, go to the Links page here at MLHH, and check out Bill Choisser's "On Being A Longhair", --- it's a great read!
Anyway, I just wanted to also say a hearty WELCOME to MLHH, --- and that I wish for you many, MANY years of happy hair farming!!

Happy Birthday! Your hair is lookin' good! Don't trim 'till you get to your goal. Things will seem to even out on its own.
