So how come all ex-presidents have to build a memorial library? Is it a jolly good read???
Important documents pertaining to their administration are stored there. The presidency generates a *lot* of public documents. Presumeably many of them are signed and are thus priceless artifacts.
I assume that some of the many gifts they receive from foreign dinitaries are also on display. It's probably a nice tourist attraction. I've never actually visited one though. It seems like it would do good for the local economy of wherever they came from.
Also, it would have valuable "first source" material for anybody studying history. However, many of these functions are performed by the National Archives. AFAIK, the Archives may only be requuired to store certain items; perhaps only bills signed. Booooring. People want to see Reagan's saddle. Who are we to stand in their way?
I often think the Clinton Library should have on display a piece of oval office carpet with that "naughty" stain on it.
lol

And of the Nixon Library: The remains of a gate with some water behind it?
LOL
It is their one last chance to try to put history of their administrations in a positive light, and sometimes, as in Roosevelt, their final resting place. We feel very fortunate to visit these places, in the cases of men who have been good presidents. Texas, and the Methodist uni where Bush wants to be memoralized are all having an unfortunate discussion about that.
The man does NOT represent the country well, and history will bear that out. Sad that we have had to all put up with it. I initially grew my hair out, in protest of his elections.
Today has been a very emotional day for many americans, and I hope you can take note of that in the broader world. Many of us feel a long injustice has finally been put right.
We are in a time of some real change and soul searching. Please bear with us, and look for some very different moves in the future, if you can.

John, In Bush's case, maybe it should be an elementary school!
It could feature a display of a wax figure of him reading a children's book upside down. lol
peace, jonalbear
They didn't always have libraries. This is something that began in the 20th century if I am not mistaken. As someone else said, they could hand everything over to the National Archive but having a library: is an ego boost, serves as a sort of shrine to their years in office (which is pretty much the same thing as an ego boost), and allows them to control information flow and access to papers, i.e. protect and preserve their image. It seems every new presidential library is bigger than the last one and they can have them. I for one would rather go get my teeth cleaned than go see a president's library.
Ego.
Why are all presidents related to the British monarchy?
Illuminati.
In case your bored on your next visit to the US.
