So, all my life I have hated most of the haircuts I have received; I have very few good feelings associated with getting my haircut. In fact, most often I go through a period of "despair" or "withdrawal" after getting any noticeable amount cut off. I have finally found a stylist who has mastered the art of "cutting without cutting". Now my hair is at the "bottom of my collar" (although I seldom wear such shirts), and the top is about 8.5" inches. I consider my hair still a bit short and would prefer if it yet a couple inches longer. That way it flows a bit more and looks kinda long, but not super long.
It seems that most longhairs on this site have what I consider to be stereotypical "rocker/biker" long hair with little "style" to it, or some even sport the super thick untamed look, etc. I don't fall in this realm of longhairs, yet I don't fit into the typical corporate shorthair mold either. Nothing but drones and look-alikes, all! I prefer a longer pretty head of hair that is well maintained and has some "style" to it, not looking as if I haven't cut it in years or don't care how it looks as long as it is long. For me the hair has to be long, but have an attractive "look" to it, like some styles of Johnny Depp, etc.
Thus it seems I am a "type" of longhair, but not one who desires hair to the middle of his back. To me that just lacks the cool "style" component. Hair should not just be long for long's sake, but it should look good on the person as well. If you are one of the few guys with hair to the middle of your back, and your hair is straight and not too thick, with a nice sheen, and you are fit, it probably is looks good. My hair has a slight wave to it, and I have a fair number of strands of normal diameter. The longer my hair gets, the straighter it becomes. That is one of the reasons I hate having short hair. For me it has to be super short or at least 7" on top-; otherwise, it's too difficult to style.
The longest I've ever had my hair was 15 inches, and it looked pretty good. I was just starting to get tangles at this stage. One summer day I got a "bad" haircut and before I knew it, I had just 1" of hair left! The stylist screwed up and kept cutting to "even it up", etc. Eventually, I just said cut it off and I'll start over. Terrible idea! I learned from the experience that if a stylist screws up to just leave and quit cutting. It's better to have to grow out six inches than 12! So to make a long story short, my girlfriend looked at me afterward and said I was no longer the same person. I knew then that that was the beginning of the end. Anyway, thanks for reading and let me know your thoughts. I am about 4 months away from a decent ponytail but don't plan to grow it out much more than another 6 to 8 months, at which point I should have about 30-35cm. Fortunately, my hair grow a somewhat faster than average. Peace!
Hi Quasi,
Hey, welcome to the mlhh as it is longhair central for us guys!I enjoyed reading your post and have no problem with your goal for longhair.Even though I'm a big fan of very,very long hair some of us prefer it not quite that long.Basically every guy has their own particular goal in mind.Anyway it would be cool if you could post a pic so we can get an idea of what your hair is like.Anyway at least you have an interest in growing out and do be careful of butcher stylists my friend.Cheers
Mark
You would easily be a long hair with those goals. Though there are many here with much longer hair (rocker length as you rightly call it) many of us have pony tails to shoulder blade or mid-back.

I totally hear from where you are coming from.
However, when you have long hair that is all one length, you are really limited in how you can style it, other than wear it loose or put it in a ponytail.
If you want 'stylish' long hair, you'd get that if you get layers, or use chemicals.
Hmmm... are you a true longhair? Well, lets see now, you said;
"I have hated most of the haircuts I have received"
"I go through a period of "despair" or "withdrawal" after getting any noticeable amount cut off."
"I don't fit into the typical corporate shorthair mold either. Nothing but drones and look-alikes"
I think most here can relate to these statements. So if all this is true then, in my book, you are a longhair. However, it's not wise to criticize others within your own little minority. At least you didn't say "rat's nest".
Personally, I would like to see a more cohesive unity among us. At the rate it's going with this prejudice in schools against longhaired students soon we'll be like North Korea which passed a law banning longhair.
If you check some of the other post then you'll see there are quite a few here whose hair is not that long or just starting to grow their hair. How about a pic?
