hi guys, i was just wondering why everyone chose to grow their hair, like, what or who their inspiration was?
i think mine stems from when i was about 8 or so, i played a game called warhammer quest (one of games workshop's one, a sort of spinoff from warhammer) where the barbarian character had back-length hair, and from then on i really wanted to look like him. i told my mum and she was like cool, grow it, but whenever the hairdresser came round i always had mine trimmed and it never grew past about 5 or 6 inches!
anyway, now i'm re-growing, and i would say there are plenty of celebrities i see who i think "that's how i would love my hair to look". i know we're all our own person, and our hair will always differ from what we dream it will look like, but i was just inquisitive as to who your role models are in the world of long hair?!
i did love david beckham's when it was long, and paul hunter also inspired me, his looked awsome. he was a snooker player who dies a few years back from cancer, if anyone was wondering. i'm sure loads of other people have also inspired me, but these are just a couple i can think of.
Mostly the dude in enslaved on the cover of eld. And my uncles and dad all had long hair, but I can't get hair like they can so I am kinda disapointed haha. They have that hair like Hegg.
This time I was inspired by metal musicians and the crowds at metal concerts.
Last time when I was 12 I made a failed attempt that was inspired by some tv serie where the main character had longhair.
Can't remember which serie it was though.
In my case I just knew that I wanted long hair. No one in particular inspired me.
GUIDO THE BARBER; who gave me my last haircut.
It was horrible and expensive. When I got to my car and saw what it looked like, I said to myself; "That's the last haircut I am ever getting". And so it has been...HA!
Me! Helped by those who thought men's hair should be short in late 1960s.
Up the revolution!
Well, for me this is a question with a complicated answer, but I'll get to the point. I inspired myself to grow long hair. Ever since I was a child I was obsessed and compulsive about keeping my hair short or shaved and regular visits to the barber.
Almost two years ago I decided to stop getting haircuts as part of a diet regime. I planned to grow until I reached goal weight. I still am not at goal weight but I been growing for 20+ months.
At first I was obsessed with monitoring the growth and exploring haircare routines. Then I moved into just letting it grow. I stopped measuring the hair and enjoy watching it as it finally is moving out of the awkward stage. Now I can say I have made peace with my hair fixation and really love having long hair.
You on this board are my motivation and some my inspiration. I've included a picture I found on the Internet, before I started growing. Perhaps he was my subliminal inspiration.
Cheers to all,
Don

Great bands and wonderful musicians.

Funny how this question pops up every now and again on the board :D
There's no one inspiration for me. Part of mine stemmed from guys on TV or movies or artwork with long hair, which I always thought looked cool.
Then I joined the military, where my hair had to be kept short. With as quickly as mine grows, that meant getting it cut about every week-and-a-half to keep it within regulations. That got tiresome rapidly, so when I hit the ten-year mark and decided to stick it out to 20, I promised myself I was going to take a break from haircuts for a while.
Had my last haircut two days before my retirement from the service. Originally I hadn't planned on growing it much longer than a few inches below the shoulders, but the longer it got the more I liked it. Now it's a little past my belt-line.
One Man was my true inspiration, although there are others.
I have to admit that this guy is gorgeous with his hair and all:)

Here is another image. I admit I did not even recognize him in that other image. I have some difficulty in recognizing faces. Check out the link. My friend Bill has this to the extreme, but I have it just moderately.
Anthony has gorgeous hair in this image, and it is quite thick. Take a close look at the diameter of his ponytail.

Don't be embarrassed. It took me a few seconds, too--the context is just so unusual for him, for one thing (i.e., he's not trying to look goofy or punky in any way).

I have always liked the look of long hair and with guidance and encouragement from mlhh, just stopped getting it cut.
No inspiration here as I've had many styles over the years and fancied growing hair out and saving on going stylists.

Mine was originally was WCW Wrestler Sting, Then Later Various other wrestlers, Shawn michaels,Triple H,Edge, then it was Ozzy Osbourne, and Jesus Christ.
Also I Used to be a Roadie for a Black sabbath Tribute band, and it went with the Image and the whole music scene i was into.
technically wasn't jesus black with short hair?
although that doesn't really matter if the stereotypical pics of him are what inspired you, i'm just nit-picking!
Uh, I don't think we will ever know Jesus' concrete physical appearance, the corporeal form of the dude ain't around for some two millenia. I'd rather say he was a dark-tanned Caucasian, though, the geographical conditions aren't likely to indicate a big number of blacks.
Yes,I think I've seen this question asked before but what the heck its worth asking again! You know I've been a longhair so long its really hard for me to think back that far as what inspired me to grow my hair long.I would think just seeing guys around and about back in the late seventies and early eighties who had longhair caught my attention. However I think I always wanted longhair and just went on my journey after graduating from high school. Its kind of weird that I never had longhair while I was in school though.

Have been wanting to do this for a very long time and about 4 months into the journey my best friend said that I should keep it up. Turned out he died in Sept. of '06 and now I do it in remembrance of him...so he is partly the motivating factor...a big part of it as well as the people on this board.
Cheers,

When I originally decided that I wanted to have long hair, I was 12 years old, it was 1969, and long hair on men was fairly common. I faced stiff opposition from my parents naturally, as well as from teachers and some classmates but I stood firm and grew it long. The decision was as much about who I was and how I viewed myself as it was influenced by what anyone else looked like, although at the time, virtually every male that I admired had long hair (i.e. The Beatles). When it came time to get a job, I had to cave in and cut it. However, when I was 22, I moved from the relatively conservative midwestern U.S. to San Diego, California where long haired men have been a common sight for decades. I grew it out again and it was not a problem, even while working at a U.S. government job for 30+ years. I continue to wear my hair long, though it is now decidedly un-trendy, because it is part of my identity. To wear it short at this point would be to falsify who I am.
well to be honest just seeing cool dudes with long hair inspired me esp Brandon Lee from the crow. When I was younger I just never knew how to grow out hair or knew how to take care of it so left it short, plus my hair would always grow so damn fast I got sick of getting a haircut every 2 months to keep it short and once I grew it out I then knew long hair was truly me just never felt so alive before and happiest with my appearence :)
When I was a child I hated haircuts.
One day, at my grandpas, I noticed a cigar box with a painting on the cover with a bunch of Dutch men and they all had long hair. I knew then that when I got old enough I was growing it out.
After that I noticed any art or portrait depicting longhair. This one of Conan the Barbarian was always one of my favs.
Conan for me as well. I also always liked the way wrestlers looked with long hair, but the barbarian warrior look was my biggest motivation aside from the obvious heavy metal reasons.
I'm not sure it was any one person. But I knew by the time I was 11 that I wanted it. But I have really conservative parents, so... [INSERT STORY OF UNDYING REGRET HERE]

My great-uncle - who passed away a few years ago decided one day to not cut his hair any more.
He wasn't a "great man", never did anything historic, fought for his country in the second war to end all wars, raised a number of kids and was always kind and generous.
I miss him a lot.
