Hi all.
I am three months or so since my last hair cut.
I am thinning a bit in the frontal area and also now have (yikes) a bald spot about an inch or so in circumference on the crown of my head.
I don't want to be one of these jokers with the comb-over look.
Any of you gentleman have a problem with thinning hair?
Should I try Rogaine (or similar) or maybe prescribed meds like Propecia? How about saw palmetto?
Or should I just shave bald and accept it?
Uh, no. That doesn't seem to be an option.
I want my hair long, but not if it looks like some aging fossil just trying to cover up bald spots.
Thanks all.
Some of us who are older do, but we grow our hair anyway.
Actually, you have more reason than ever to grow your hair now, because you may not have enough hair to grow it later.
LOL. Good point!
Why not grow it? Regarding the comb-over, or looking like you're trying to cover the bald spots, if you don't want to look like you're covering them, don't try to cover them. Accept them for what they are and go from there.
Too many people think that the only ways to "accept" partial baldness is to either cover it up or to embrace it to the extent of shaving off everything. I've seen plenty of guys with receding hairlines and/or bald spots with no effort being made to cover them, and the rest of their hair looked just fine.
As for the various medicines, talk to your doctor. That might be another option to limit or even reverse the problems.
Don't you just love comb-overs flapping in wind...why oh why!
Was it Bobby Charlton or his brother Jackie that had a combover? I think it was Jackie. I used to love to see it pointing straight up when jumping to head the ball in a soccer match!
Even with a receding hairline and thinning hair, long hair hair still looks great on men. You should definitely keep growing it, as long as you don't shave the top of your hair completely bald.
Thanks, George.
And no, I won't shave it bald.
Wouldn't trust myself with anything sharp on my head.
With respect to those on this board who have the courage to continue despite the obstacles Nature has placed in their way - HELL NO - time to cut it short. You are describing a "skullet" (see link).
Skullets
Skullets only really look stupid like that when somebody has chosen to shave the top of their head completely bald. Natural skullets look fine.
The only way to have a natural skullet is if your completely bald from the ears upwards. If your bald but have long hair covering the ears and all the fringes are long all round then it isn't a skullet.
If I were bald but had the above characteristics I would feel offended if someone said that it was a skullet.
I cringe when I see old photos of myself with a mullet (late 80's-early 90's) and now associate anything to do with mullets of today with people of generally white trash/low intelligence rednecks. Most people around where I live are of this category though there are of course exceptions.
I seen the pictures of the skullets and it definately ranks as a minus to the guys wearing them. I'd rather have a completely shaved head then look like a stupid dickhead.

I fail to see what's wrong with the hair nature gave you? If nature dictates that your hair grows everywhere except on top of your head, then so be it.
Hell - Just have a go at it - if your growing it for yourself then it doesn't matter too much what others think. My motto is Try (almost) Anything Once!
Duncan
I think he carries it off nicely.
Oops, well here's a link:
Grow your hair anyway!
We tend to be our own worst critics and get worked up over something 99.9% of others do not notice or pay attention to.
Nutrition wise, I have found biotin and MSM helpful for hair, skin and nails.

I would NOT shave it.
Whew, good.
Mine is thinnest at the usual spot at the top back of my head. I'm not in comb-over territory, though. As it's grown out over the last nearly 26 months I've discovered it's thinner than I had hoped and I've been tying it back in a tail more often lately. But I still intend to grow it out to terminal length no matter how thin it is. :-)
I'm not really that old at 34, but I have a lot of thinning on top, a nice big bald spot on the back and lots of recession at the temples. This is a question that comes up every now and then here. There is a large differing of opinion on this, and even with myself, I debate back and forth and wonder what the heck I'm doing sometimes trying to have long hair. Lots of guys can pull of the half-bald otherwise long look just fine. I ask myself, does my hair really look horrid, or is it not so bad after all? I wonder what people really think, but then wonder why I'd care about that at all. Most people probably really don't care or notice anyhow. We all have our moments of self-doubt. I guess this is healthy, to control a rampant ego.
Scooper mentioned Mario Batalli; I think he looks just fine. He just came out with a new cookbook from when he and Gwyneth Paltrow went to Spain, lots of picture to get an idea of what this style looks like. Over the past few years, he has thinned even more. On Molto Mario that was taped a few years ago, he had lots more hair. I saw him on the Today show the other morning, and it looks like just a few strands are left on top, but he still looks OK in my book. Of course some would disagree, and that's OK Some say they'd jsut cut it if they were to become bald, but then it's easy to say what you'd do in a hypothetical situation when you're not actually faced with it.
As for trying to hide anything, not me. I don't comb my hair any certain way to cover up the crown. You can see my scalp just fine, and I'm OK with that most of the time. It seems a matter of being self-conscious versus confident about one's self. With me, I go back and forth with my personal confidence level based on however I'm feeling and so forth, but I'm an emotional trainwreck half the time.
I've thought about just shaving it all off and saying the hell with it, but then I really like my hair and would be loathe to part with it. I'm "attached" to it. ;-) I am putting up another picture of a guy from Sweden that I have used as an example in the past, Carl Johan Grimmark of the band Narnia. I think he looks very nice with his blonde hair, but maybe it helps that he has a pretty face too, much prettier than me!
Women and men have worn wigs throughout history. Ancient Egypt men wore longhair wigs over completely shaved heads to prevent lice.
It would be a way to flout and show contempt for workplace and school hair codes( you all know what I think should be done about that) by covering up a haircut the minute you are on your own time.
Just a thought.
Rogaine and Propecia is the best choice. Also, you might want to consider substituting Avodart for Propecia. I take one Avodart capsule every 3 days. This way it is actually cheaper than Propecia and it works better in most cases. Either way, you need to address the matter very soon.
