Hey everyone -
I have another question, also dealing with the awkward stage which my hair is still very much in, painfully enough. Is it normal for hair to feel fragile during the awkward stage? That's not really the right word but I can't think of a better one at the moment. What I mean by it is that lately I feel that if I put some work into my hair - granted, if it's on a day when my hair cooperates - then I can eventually get it looking decent; but then in order to keep it looking semi-good, I have to constantly fix it up by brushing it through with my fingers or checking it in any reflective surfaces I pass by during the day. Because it only takes a slight wind or the wrong humidity outside to turn it into a disheveled, bushy mess. It's really frustrating, cause I rarely feel like my hair looks good. So I'm wondering if this is 1) just a typical stage I'm going through that will pass with time, 2) a look caused by something I'm doing wrong with my hair care (i.e. using the wrong products, poor washing techniques, ineffective styling methods), or 3) simply the way my hair type is and will always be.
Admittedly, the look of my hair has gotten better as it's grown longer. It doesn't flip out on the sides or front and in the back it will almost lay close to my neck instead of curling out of control. It's still slightly wavey and occasionally it feels frizzy to me, especially if I use too much shampoo when washing. But otherwise, I honestly think I'm doing all the right things I can possibly be doing right now. I just hate the way it often looks right now and can't help but wonder if it'll never end up looking like I would like it too. I'd like it to be sleek instead of dry/frizzy, straightish instead of too wavey (though I wouldn't mind if it waved or even curled as long as it looked nicer than the semi-wavey but dry-ish look I have naturally), and hanging neat and tapered at the ends rather than scrunched up.
If by you gentleman's reckoning, these are all just signs of awkward stage despair, then I'll gladly tough this not-so-hot look out and press on. Otherwise though, maybe I'm just not meant for long hair?

I am also in the awkward stage, and my hair often misbehaves as well. for your questions:
1) Yes. that's why it's called the awkward STAGE! :)
2)I doubt it. I have slightly dry, wavy hair, and it never behaves without a lot of brushing/product. Usually I don't bother doing anything, and let it go natural.
3)Possibly, but hair straightens out as it gets longer. People i've spoken to mention that putting in a ponytail makes it straighter and helps you hair stay in place, even when not tailed.
My advice is to wait it out. And also, less shampoo and more conditioner will help. My hair is pretty dry, so I usually shampoo once every 3 washes, and condition every time i wash. this has helped my hair be softer and more manageable as well. If you have little flips that stick out of your hair at odd angles, try combing underneath the flip, that will usually lower it back to your head.
Well done for getting through the worst of the awkward stage - the flips etc. I know it's really hard because hair is wavy, and it sticks out like a triangular shaped bush at the sides, I usually blow dry it to sort of curl inwards.
Anyway; regarding what you said about it taking only the slightest bit of wind to turn it into a mess, I reckon that must be something to do with the awkward stage. This is because often, I'll be walking to school, and I will see girls walking along near me with hair that hasn't got clips in it or anything, and their hair just sort of sways around a bit in the wind. Yet mine will blow over my face, blinding me, and the sides will blow upwards and flap around so violently that it feels like somebody is pulling on my hair.
Now, I either wear a hat or put my hood up when I'm walking somewhere. Also, if it's long enough, you could try tucking your fringe behind your ears - this will at least keep the front of your hair looking ok.

I agree about what you said about the girls; longer length must just be more able to cope with wind. As for my fringe/bangs, I can pretty much get them all behind my ears now. However, it just looks kind of dorky to me for some reason, so I usually just comb my bangs over to either the right or left and let them hang by my eyes. Not sure when it'll be long enough to look good parted.
i would say don't use as much shampoo for a start - if possible only use it say every other wash, or don't wash your hair as often. sounds like it's just a bit dry because the natural oils in ur scalp get stripped away by using shampoo.
use something like coconut oil after u have washed it. just a penny sized bit rubbed through your hair will make it much more slick. re-apply when it's dry too i would say.
if u want it straight i think ur only option is to straighten it. this will calm it down loads too and make it look more slick and neat etc. but yes it will get less wavy as it gets longer.
good luck!
