Don't get layers or get it thinned, that's just going to make it poofier. And welcome to the boards!
Hi Jason and Welcome to the board. We already have a Jason who posted a few threads down so if I may suggest you choose an initial after your name when posting.

My Motto is NEVER NEVER NEVER go near your hair with any kind of hair cutting impliment. I trimmed my bangs a few times in the beginnings of my 6 years of growing and it haunted me constantly. When The akward phase is over and everthing is growing nice and even, you will be glad you resisted the scissors
My suggestion is to just try as hard as you can to stick it out without getting a haircut/trim. you will deffinately appreciate it, as i cannot tell you how many stories i have read of people in similiar situations as yourself and getting the hair cut, trimmed, thinned, etc. and then INSTANTLY regretting it!!
You will appreciate the thick volume once your hair gets longer and it will make other very envious of your hair!!! :)
I think you just have a really different hair type than the style you are trying to get. I think the best thing is to let it grow until it weighs enough to smooth itself out. You can't change what type of hair you have, but that doesn't mean you can look great with the hair you have.
Jason,
Welcome to the board and congrats on 18 MONTHS DUDE ! . I aggree with Garth, Todd, JMPAH and Chris M dont thin your hair This only leads to regreats later. You sound younger than I am ( 39 ) and mine USE to be thick and wavy. Im seeing the older I get the less thick...... so stick it out
To fight the bulk and knots try using clrairifying shampoos ounce in a while, jojoba oil ( when damp ), and leave in conditioners more. When you have the weight of the hair to straighten out the unrulyness you'll see what Im talkin about
Good luck brother
Steve
