A wife of a friend of mine, from time to time, asks me when I'm going to cut my hair.
Mind you, it's not a direct negative statement like "It looks bad. You need to cut it."
But more along the lines of, guys shouldn't have hair that long.
I usually ignore it and don't respond.
But this is what gets me...
Her hair is always moderately short! Not a bob, but not shoulder length either. A bit past collar.
I should tell her next time "Well, when will you grow your hair out?"
It just sickens me how women expect men to deal with the fact that they can have hair that isn't long.
And yet, it seems to be this huge obstacle for women to accept men with long hair.

In other news, I had a positive job review the other day, and glad to say my hair nor beard came up in discussion. I guess I am very fortunate to have found a company that actually values performance over appearance.
It's so freshing to hear the news that you get a good job review and it's got nothing to do with how you look or how long your hair is either. Thanks for sharing that good news with us.
So come on employers over there get real, deal with it and stop being so establishment!
Cheers,

That sounds very annoying, sounds like shes jealous of you :P Just tell her that and she should be quiet bout it.. she prolly keeps hers short cos she cant put the effort into long hair, and is jealous that u can..
And as for the job review, its probably more to do with you than the company :)
As a business student i have learnt that appearance comes second to performance.. If you dont have much experience or many qualifications and u have long hair I would assume (even with my own long hair) that u have other interests, such as partying, drugs, alcohol etc at heart, and not ur job.. But if u have a good CV, with qualifications and experience and good referances.. your long hair and general appearance are not important anymore, its prooved that u are a hard and commited worker and thats much more important..
As for actual appearance in the job, longhaired men can look very smart and suave, and are sometimes the first choice for some companies to be the face of the company when giving presentations because a smart longhair person, in my opinion, looks like hes putting alot more effort into it than a smart shorthaired person...
So yeah, there are negative and positive feelings associated with longhair especially in a job interview.. If you can play along with the positives and hide the negatives itll turn out good for you, and sounds like uve done that well.
yeah i'm not a fan of this double standard, I thought men and women were supposed to be treated equally
I see these women at my gym who have the most gawd awful short haircuts! It looks like their stylist took a large machete and sliced upwards from the base of their necks on a 45 degree angle producing what looks like a decapitated ponytail effect.Quite ugly I think.Don't know what they call these cuts but they sure look crummy!LOL
On the positive side congrats on the positive job interview. Its good to know there is hope for the longhaired guy in the business world of corporate weenies:)Cheers

Yeah, I know... double standard. A female friend of mine has very short hair and is often directly and indirectly telling me to cut my hair. Next time she does that, I'll ask her when she's going to grow her out! (that was a good suggestion, thanks)!
Only thing is, that female friend of mine thinks that both men and women should have short hair...
When I was younger and heard that comment asking me when I was going to cut my hair, I responded well I am not quite sure as it never crossed my mind and to be honest I like this style. I would then ask them if this is the time I get to ask them about their appearnece and make suggestions in how they look ???
They usually look quite stunned to say the least.

What always strikes me too is that (in mainstream American/European culture) men just get to wear pants, women can wear either pants or skirts. What's up with that? Kind of the same thing as you're describing with the hair. But which would make most anatomical sense for men to wear?
Congratulations on the interview as well!
Good point about the skirts! It's true, Anatomically speaking, they'd be even better for men! I thought about that a while ago when we had heritage day at my former workplace, and a male co-worker of Scottish descent wore a kilt to work.
...it was not so long ago that not only was it expected that men have short hair, but also wear a vested suit, leather shoes and a bowler hat, not to mention buttoned up PJ coats....yech !
We are fortunate to live in an age where men can wear comfortable clothing......
I have always gotten a kick out of the photo of Igor Sikorsky making a flight in his first helicopter
If we were meant to have hair a certain length then it would stop growing wouldn't it? I mean armpit hair doesn't normally grow down to the waist.
Great news on the job interview and good luck with your career ATP.

Yeah, this really annoys me as well. Women can have their hair at any length they want, as well as pretty much any style, and it isn't an issue, while men are expected to all have short "clean cut" hair, and as soon as they break that norm, it is an issue.
Although, to this day no one has ever told me to cut my hair short =)
