As mentioned in my "Overdue Update" post on Saturday, I was going to share some pictures of my hair after using foam/sponge type curlers (by Goody). It's like a fake "chemical-free" perm. Only it's not permanent. The curls look great for a day. Sometimes they're still OK on the second day if my hair didn't get wet. By the third day, the curls are gone and my hair needs to be washed anyways. If I just let my hair air dry, it's slightly wavy, but if I'm going somewhere nice and want to leave my hair down & show it off, the curls make my hair go from good to great.
It's a lot of extra work. After I wash my hair, I put in some anti-flat cream, then grab small sections of hair and twist them, before finally wrapping them around the foam rollers. There are flexible wire tips that fold over and hold the hair tight. Not very comfortable for sleeping, but the reward is curly hair in the morning! (although the curls start a few inches from the scalp).
Upon unwinding the hair from the curlers, I need to finger comb my hair. This makes me realize what people with naturally curly hair have to go through! Very susceptible to knots. Then my hair looks like it has a lot more volume. Since I only give it a quick finger comb, my hair looks a little unruly, but I like that. Kind of like a rock star look - designer messy hair!
I hope these links to additional pictures work:
Dude, your hair seriously looks great! I think everyone else hit the nail on the head when they say "we are our own worst critics"!!
It's great you decided not to go through with the damaging perm and decided to use natural alternatives instead.
Your hair really does look wonderful man
Awesome, thanks bro! I really like the look of the curls. If only it was less hassle to do this - or it would be my daily ritual. But, it does get quicker the more I do it. Yeah, better than a damaging chemical perm would have been.
I may be a bit critical of my hair, but I do get the occasional negative comment which makes me more self-conscious. One of my short-haired friends often tells me that my hair is too fine and thin to grow long. That's partly what motivated me to start thinking about a perm or at least the chemical-free curlers/rollers.
Cheers!
Peter
You might want to try a steam hairsetter such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Caruso-C97953-SalonPro-Molecular-Hairsetter/dp/B0002JKPB8/ I've never used it myself, but in reading about hair I've come across references to it, and it is supposed to be the best way to set hair. You can check the Amazon customer reviews.
Thanks, I took a look at that. My concern was to keep heat away. Looking at the picture, I'm wondering if the roller has a Velcro type finish on it. I had some rollers like that and they were really hard to remove - almost took the hair out!
But, seeing as it uses steam rather than a hot metal roller, or chemicals, that does sound appealing.
Has anyone here tried that Caruso SalonPro Molecular Steam Hairsetter?
For the velcro rollers, you take them out by unrolling them, doing the opposite of how you put them in. As you saw, it doesn't work to try to pull them out and keep the hair in place.
I think heat from steam may be ok, because the heat is combined with moisture.
Ah, ok... maybe I didn't give the velcro rollers a fair chance last time. I might have tried to pull them off rather than unroll them. All I remember is that I panicked when they wouldn't come out easily and when I did get them off, lots of hair came with it. I'll remember that if I get that kit or just get velcro rollers in general. Thanks.
Peter,
Great looking update you posted earlier!
Your mane has come a long way - it looks fantastic any way you wish to wear it.
Thanks for sharing!
