Hey everyone,
My name is Fred and I need some advise! I love having my hair long. And I havn't gotton a trim in a long time... I'm going to get it trimmed soon because of really bad split ends. My hair is really thick too. My questions is, what do I tell my the person who is cutting my hair? Last time I got it trimmed They made it look really stupid, like almost a bowl cut.
Anyone have any ideas??
Heres a current picture of me.
Hey, Fred.
I would advise you not to get a trim at all, its a myth that a trim actually helps split ends... I have them, especially in the winter where the cold weather damages my hair.
Its all about how you treat your hair. There are things you can do such as conditioning the ends of your hair often and brushing carefully, being careful not to put stress on your hair which will stop you getting split ends.
A trim will only get rid of the split ends temporarily; its how you treat your hair which will determine how healthy it actually is.
I cant see anything wrong with your hair; its a prime example of good growth. Possibly youre being paranoid about the health of your hair, others cant see as many split ends as you can.
Try your best never to get a trim, hairdressers just love going crazy with those scissors and you can lose up to a year of growth sometimes, and if they do a bad job and you need to re-shaped... Even more than a years growth.

Thanks guys! I wash my hair everyday, but the ends still look really bad and almost like they're clumped togther if that makes any sense. Also one side is uneven then the other. Atleast that's what I see!
What do you suggest I do? I use shampoo/cond. everyday and calm/brush it
Hi Fred,
Sounds like you will follow the good advice already given here by Justin. It looks like you also have "wavy" hair, as I do. Wavy hair tends to be on the dry side, especially in Winter. It is just calling out for moisture, and very little shampooing. I have been following the advice on the "curly girl" site, and found it really helpful, even if it has loads of photos of gorgeous women--who happen to have wavy or curly hair.
If you went to a stylist, usually the first thing they do is WET your hair; for people like you and I, that is the first clue the hair cut will turn out TOO darn short. Here is what happens: they wet it to straighten it; then cut the same length, say 2 inches all around off. THEN, it dries. Suddenly your wavy hair springs back to it's curly self and you have "too short hair" not at all how you like it. If you do have it cut, make sure they cut it dry, just like you wear it, and only cut it to clean ends or even a side.
You have fantastic, handsome hair, not in need of a cut--just moisture. Find some great conditioner without Silicones, and use it daily. Shampooing only weekly for me has been a revelation. What a difference in control, appearance, and no more frizz.
Best of luck with what you decide, but it looks amazing right now.

Hi Again Fred, and all,
just a correction to that website is:
www.naturallycurly.com with a ton of info on curly/wavy hair, how to care for it, and how to cut it.
and to take out the silcones, check out MopTop at:
http://www.moptophair.com/care.shtml
advises how to do the "conditioner only" method, and get it right. I, personally, think their products are great.
The "naturally curly" site has an area where people review any number of products, and their experience with them, and the ingredients in them, cost and so forth.
Lastly, I forgot to mention that after you condition/shower, a dime size glob of gel will do wonders to hold IN the moisture in your hair. LET it DRY naturally. Leave it alone, and it will amaze you. Of course, it is gel without the bad stuff, and nothing to make your hair crunchy or stiff.
Thats my latest. I should get busy and put up a new photo.
best of luck,
-Dan
Thanks so much everyone!! I was so close to getting it cut, I'll try everyones advise and see what happens!
That could be adding to the problem, dont brush your hair when its wet, this damages it a lot...
And applying shampoo every day strips the hair of its naturally protecting oils.
And check your shampoo's ingredients, potassium based shampoo is damaging to hair.
I use shampoo on my hair once or twice a week and find my hair is a lot healthier then when I have showered and used shampoo every morning.
No one ever says I look greasy due to the lack of washing; I just brush to keep my hair tidy.
It seems a lot that youre paranoid about how your hair looks, hair always suffers in the winter, and maybe this has just shocked you a bit. Be more confident in yourself and it will start to feel a lot better... And for it being an uneven length, try playing around with your parting, sometimes this can help.
Summary - Wash less, Care less and just relax, your hair looks great.

Hi Fred! Maybe you can cut your hair layerd instead of trim.
I hope this helps
You have beautiful long hair. Please don't let a Salon moron demolish hair as spectacular as that ever again.
You can cut the splits yourself. We call it here "Target and destroy."
1. Look at the ends.
2. Find a hair with a split.
3. Using SHARP sissors cut just above the split.
The job is done and you STILL have your hair. It really is quite easy to do.
Best of luck to you.
Best advice there Justin...eh trimmers!
We'd hate to see another tale of woe, unless some of us forgot our 12 week standing appointment and no face!
Cheers,
John.B
PS...roast me alive!!!
I agree with Justin and if the task seems endless and beyond your patients, I suggest do 5 minutes a day of search and destroy. in a few weeks you'll begin to notice an improvement. Soon you'll find it more difficult to find the splits which means success,
I would try that before heading to a salon.

Last time I got it trimmed They made it look really stupid, like almost a bowl cut.
Yeah, I trim mine myself. It's pretty bad when a shop mistakes a trim for a bowl cut lol. You have awesome hair.
I'm actually going in a couple of weeks to get my "annual" trim. I have a barber (not hairdresser or hair stylist) that I've been going to for many years that used to take care of my short hair. It's a rite of spring for us as he also takes off my beard for me at the same time. Call me a sexist, but I believe that a man will do a better job of cutting men's hair. I've never had a woman who knows the sordid details of knowing to shave the back of the neck, and trim ears and eyebrows.
Some points though
- I really trust my barber and have known him for years
- At least in Canada - a barber will cut your hair when dry with perhaps only a little misting
- He works hard, based on my asking him to, to try to even up the ends but keep the maximum possible length. My very first trim, I lost 2" on the very back which I expected. Since then, it's been about 1"
- Tip well - that makes sure they'll do a good job the next time too.
If you don't have a barber you know, get some references. Ask people who have hair you like who they go to - even if they have short hair.
Hope that helps.
For reference I've attached some before/after pictures from my trim in Dec 2007

Hey Fred, that's great looking hair! I've used Justin's method of cutting off the split ends with sharp scissors. But my concern was that I would miss a lot of them and the split could go further up the hair.
Recently I went for a trim to a regular discount hair stylist. I simply said that I'm growing my hair down to my waist (even though I'm not) and asked to take off as little as possible. I did, however, get a blunt cut, so the amount trimmed was anywhere from a fraction of an inch to 2 inches. It actually made my hair look thicker and to be honest, looked better than the $35 trim from an upscale salon I got last time.
Fred,
Alot of good advise has already been said, only thing I would say is , if there is no one you trust, to trim, do it yourself.
and Welcome aboard the board ya got a handsome mane there.
Nice drum set ya have there. Is that a Tama ensignia I see on yer Snare head?
I play as well.
Steve
Yes, It's a Tama Metal works snare! And there tama Swingstar drums
How long have you been playing??
Well Fred my Ludwig Double bases are sadly in there cases
Haveing to work to support my wife and 2 young kids doesnt leave alot of time to play anymore. Also the neighbors dont particularly like when I play this concert set. Started playing around 15 years ago but stopped 2 or 3 ago.
Thinking about selling them and getting a electronic set allthough I still cant get past the "non feel" of the e- set
Maybe if I move to a house with a basement ?
Anywy keep up your playing and dont loose your chops as I feel is happening to me.
Hey Welcome and your hair looks great! as for a trim, as little as possible. I have someone go through and only take off a maybe an 1/8th of an inch, no one can tell that I have done anything but I can feel the difference. NAyway it looks great and keep up the great work!

Greetings Fred, your hair appears to be in good shape. How bad are the split ends? Bad split ends cause a lot of tangling at the ends. If your hair is not tangling badly you may be able to grow it a bit longer before trimming. I have not had a trim in maybe 15 years and my hair is over 3 feet long.
Scott
Here is another picture of my hair and little closer
Sorry forgot to post it,hopefully it will work now
Hey Fred,
I would avoid going to some stylist, you already know they'll cut off more than you want.
I agree with the rest, search and destroy split ends.
Also;
Don't brush when wet.
Don't snatch through tangles, coax them out.
Use conditioner.
Try Biotin, some of us believe it helps promote hair growth.
Later,
Paul
I would talk to women you know with nice hair or other guys for that matter and ask who trims their hair? Then you have to tell the stylist exactly what you want done to your hair. Tell them how much trim. Better yet show them by holding your hair and indicating the length you want trimmed.
