Hi All,
I've had my mind made up about FINALLY growing my hair out about 5 or 6 times in my life. I start out feeling good about the whole thing, and then I hit the dreaded awkward phase when it's about 3 inches long. I have these odd cowlicks where my sideburns are that sort of swoop upwards, and my hair as a whole looks like a giant poofing mushroom. I always end up getting frustrated and insecure about my appearance and shaving it down to skin.
Just to preface- my hair is EXTREMELY thick (as in, thicker than 99% of people I've met) to the point that it is difficult to even shave down, as it clogs the hair-buzzer). I think it may be slightly wavy, but I've never gotten it long enough to know for sure.
Is there hope for me having long hair? Are there any tips on how to muscle past the horribly awkward stage? I would really like to be able to grow my hair out, but I just can't seem to deal with how bad it looks while I'm doing so.
You could always start wearing a beanie hat until your hair gets past the dreaded awkward stage. This should work.
And just... Persevere.
Good luck and I am looking forward to seeing some update pictures with some great, shoulder length hair in the future.

Hahaha... The beanie is actually my way of dealing with awkward stage right now.
Patience and perseverance.
Welcome David!
May I just say that there are no "short cuts" to long hair {{{:-)
Just be patient, and give it time.
When the going gets tough just stay away from the mirror and get busy with other things.
The "awkward stage" time will soon pass and, well, there you are!
Best of luck with the journey!

Here's the tip:
A mind that says "I'm going to do it no matter what."
Presto. Long Hair!
=)
well...not giving a damn what other people think of your looks will help you immensely during the process...and lots of the times our hair doesn't look as bad as we think during the awkward phase...just goes to show you that we are our worst critic sometimes....good luck!! :)
I just passed the awkward phase and I always found i useful to just look around you. Everyone else is just as messed up looking as you and they're really trying (in a different direction).
