Reports surfacing today indicate that if you are taking finasteride for MPB or an enlarged prostate you should keep taking it because it has been shown to help prevent prostate cancer.
News story from Reuters
I would be careful about taking a drug that messes with the body's hormones. I have just found out that my granddad has prostate cancer but Im not sure if this would have helped him.
If there are no side effects, and you know there isnt and youve had a history of prostate cancer, you may want to think about this, I guess.

For a far lower cost I use Saw Palmetto
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saw_palmetto_extract
For about $25/year it may work on the same mechanisms as does Finasteride. There's lots of anecdotal and research evidence over the centuries that tend to show that it does. At that low cost I figure what the heck - a possible solution for prostate issues along with a boost for hair growth.
I forget where I saw it, but there was also a study recently that said that daily ejaculation reduces your risk of prostate problems. Makes sense, things go wrong when not used regularly. I am doing my best to follow that particular advice. What could possibly be the downside?
Maybe you think that's TMI, but it might save your life.
You have a point there Elektros,
For what it is worth, there has been a strong corolation of prostate cancer with male celibate religious in the catholic church.
Pope Paul VI was not the first pope to die of prostate cancer, and although it could be coincidence, since if men live long enough, chances for that kind of cancer rise, but one must take precautions!
I am not just trying to be funny, as I have been a catholic celibate monk, and talk of this issue is not unknown behind the walls! Of course, catching these things early is an issue too, and perhaps male religious don't always have access to good preventive care--or wives that nag them to take their vitamins or have a digital exam.
I do think I have seen the research you refer to, and I am taking those precautions seriously!
But since this site is about hair, I did want to say that I think the previous mention of the Biotin supplement has been a big help to me--for hair growth--not the prostate issue. Time will tell of course, and I have only been taking it for 2 months.
Thanks for your mention of this pressing issue, and reminding men to get regular exams for cancer. Oddly enough, my dad actually had breast cancer a few years ago, so these things are not always just "men's problems" or "women's issues"; well except for prostates of course....
good health to all of you guys, and thanks for the great before & after stories down the page. Great shots and great reading!

I'd like to say that I'm very glad this is getting discussed. Men have to get past all the inhibitions and societal and religious taboos about this--it's a matter of survival. I've talked about this with doctors--they all agree it makes sense. The prostate is one of the glands that stores and secretes seminal fluid, some of which is a pH balancer called PSA because the urethra is acidic. This fluid needs to be expressed out because it can contain toxins and carcinogens depending on what the male ingests. It's slowly coming out that guys who develop BPH usually don't diet, exercise, and eat a lot of junk like processed foods, animal and dairy fat and if they smoke and drink a lot of alcohol it's even worse for them. They wind up with ED and are unable to regularly achieve an orgasm and vacate their prostates. Years ago, my dad who had BPH told me his urologist told him he had a lot of priests for patients because they had to be celibate. I took that message to heart. I was lucky to have heard this, but this information usually gets suppressed sadly, because men are uncomfortable talking about it. I have no problem with religious or spirituality but I believe in balancing it with what we learn from science. God gave us brains and they should be used. Don't be governed by medieval beliefs that no longer can be justified or ridiculous ideas of manliness--take care of your prostates.

I saw something a couple of years ago--I seem to remember that it was *biweekly* ejaculation at least. Thanks for the original post, BTW!
