I started going to the gym here about 3 months ago and Im already seeing progress. Right now I'm at 5'8.75 and 151 lbs. Maybe the cardio Im doing in addition to the weights can help me grow healthier hair (not that my hair isnt already healthy).
Also, for the past few months or so Ive kept my hair at a medium length hairstyle, just barely touching my shoulders when straightened but I think I might go for a longer length now.
I do weight lift a bit, but only for recreational purposes. I don't do any weight-lifting tournaments.
Matthew
You haven't entered any tournaments yet? Is this something you would consider doing?
I join Special Olympics tournaments for soccer, basketball and softball. Weight lifting, on the other hand, I only do for fun. I am not planning on joining any weight lifting competitions.
Matthew
I did (and still do) quite a lot of weightlifting, mainly to keep myself mobile. So far I'm doing pretty well, considering my weight gain from the last few years.
I managed to build some muscle, as seen in this picture taken in the summer of 2007.

You need to get up from that computer, and exercise more! You might also want to watch what you're eating more carefully. I know no one here has the courage to say it, but I will. Dude you need to make some major life changes or you're not going to have a very long life.
Hell, I have trouble loosing 10 lbs. and I'm a carpenter.
At least he puts up a pic dude. Nobody's perfect, so why don't you show us what you look like and I will let you know every flaw in your own character.
Paul
Here is a pic, knock yourself out, we all have flaws, and I hear about mine too. I'm by no means perfect.
I work out hard, every day after work, and I am slowly reaching my goals.
Everyone is different, for me putting on weight is hard, for others loosing is hard. I can tell you this much though if you watch what you eat and work out you'll get into better shape.
Maybe instead of giving me a hard time for pointing out a problem (something that has become an epidemic in the us), we should all give Linux the support and motivation to work out more and eat less and loose some weight.
I didn't see this before I posted to your other thread.
I do have to say that's some cool hair you have dude... but I think your nose is a little pointy.
I used to work out a lot but being a carpenter with 5 kids I can't really get in the grove anymore. I used to lift but now I prefer to run. Just ain't been able to do it lately.
I know what you meant in your first post but I agree with Hairball as Linux had probably heard it all before. There isn't any reason to bring it up here. I pretty sure he knows about any health issues, and better than any of us I imagine.
I think we've beat this horse enough, so on to other things.
Paul
I wouldn't say we lack courage to speak up when necessary but this is more of showing respect to a board member. He chose to reply to this thread and not ask for an opinion about his health.I respect that he posts pictures of himself as some here choose not to but still post to the board.Linux sounds like a nice guy who has cool longhair and really that's what matters most.
Mark
I never said he wasn't a nice guy or a cool person. He probably is, I have never met him. Re-read my comment, I simply am pointing out that his weight is going to affect his health negatively. It is a fact.
Considering that weightlifting is a topic on health and fitness, and somewhat physical appearance is often a motivation for weightlifting I see nothing wrong with discussing the subject of weight.
So while everyone her is afraid to speak of the elephant in the room (no pun intended) I find it ironic that no one her is willing to discuss the topic.
And no offense, but I am sure someone someplace will feel hurt, but I think my first response to seeing Linux's reply to the topic both quite literal, he does substantial weightlifting just to move every day, and it kind of ironic that the jist of the thread was more about fitness and to post pics when morbidly obese kinda hurmorous and odd.
My weight problem has its origin in a surgery that I had when I was 6 years old. It screwed up my hormonal system and caused a runaway weight gain. By the time when I graduated from college I was at more than 400 lbs. Then I started to swim and lift weights and eventually I got into bodybuilding. I managed to drop to about 250 lbs and to keep my weight at 250 - 300 lbs until a few years ago.
During the last few years I started to gain weight, about 250 lbs in the last 5 years or so, despite the fact that I maintained the same lifestyle as before. It is my age (53) and my history that are catching up with me.
I still do weightlifting and swimming, more than most people do, in order to stay fit. Thus I can still move my 500+ lbs around without too much difficulty. I have a lot of muscle underneath that fat.
Regarding showing myself, I am way past the phase when I cared about what others think. I don't hesitate to go out wearing only a pair of shorts - after years of stupid remarks about my hair and about my size I grew a very thick hide (not counting the blubber under it).
If somebody doesn't like the sight, it's his or her problem, not mine. People come in all shapes and sizes.

Hi LL,
Certainly you did not have to explain yourself here as I felt TommyTurbo crossed the line in what he posted.I certainly have the utmost respect for you dealing with what life has dealt you and just making the best of it.Obviously you had to deal with many negative comments over the years but I think its great that you take it in stride and just live your life my friend. Thanks for all your participation here on the board.Cheers
Mark
The problem here is this. I don't post too often on the board because everyone here is too pc (politically correct) which I can not stand. I deal with every day hearing things I don't want or like but that's life people. All I ever read on here is so and so doesn't like my hair. I am so sick of that, you all are too sensitive.
My comment was directed in a way that was not making a joke or fun. It was serious, and it's a fact. Weight like that is very very bad for your body. Also I have no way of knowing someone else's hormone issues.
Now I know, that's fine. Maybe Linux should see a doctor although he probably already has.
If I had said "haha, look at the fat man" I could see you being upset. Me saying that you need to lose the weight because it is a health issue, and can take years of your life is not.
Grow up people, there are going to be times when your hearing something other than "life is great, you're so perfect".
Yeah right, we know what pc is bud and I ain't pc.
I suppose you think we're all a bunch of girly men? (to quote Arnold)
I like a good confrontation, that is if my opponent is worthy.
Ain't nobody perfect, show us a pic.
Tommyturbo? What kind of name is that anyway?
Paul
Well, I think you are looking for a fight not productive conversation even if the topic is touchy.
I posted a pic, but I get a screening notice every post.
Now you are putting words in to my mouth. Never mentioned any girly men, plus I think it would be a touch hipicritcal to say that since I have long hair too.
As for my name, I have a bunch of turbocharged cars, It was a name that I ended up with from friends/coworkers and it has stuck. Why don't you explain yours.
Paul Killa Mutha Fu**a Tubbs, thank you very much!
I got that nick name at work after a little tiff with my boss. I no longer work for him but every time I see him, even after 10 years, he still calls me this.
I didn't say you thought of us as girly men because of our hair! lol. I said it because you think we're all so "sensitive", and that, you did say. I'm just demonstrating that everybody here is not a pacifist. (BTW girls I know not all female are sensitive)
I think your original post to LinxLonghair was insensitive and it sounded like you are the one looking for a fight. How can you expect "productive conversation" after popping off about his size? I like the guy and his weight is not any concern of mine.
The reason I come here is to discuss longhair and the problems associated with wearing it. Their size, color, gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs or any thing else is not an issue. I don't care.
Paul
First of all I certainly am not politically correct!Actually I spit in the eye of political correctness to put it mildly. What I was just saying is that Linux, I'm sure, has heard what you posted to him a million times by others in real life so it would be nice if he didn't have to deal with such comments here.I'm sure he is well aware of his situation.
Now I certainly do remember you from a couple years ago and also recall your pics.If I'm correct you posted a pic of yourself with a BMW Z4 roadster. You sounded like a cool guy then and I'm sure you still are so I just hope you aren't offended by what I posted to you.I just felt I needed to stick up for our friend Linux.Cheers
Mark
Mark
Yep, thats me, and I think I am a ok person....and nothing offends me, I have seen and heard it all. Well glad to hear your not politically correct. But in all honesty too many people here give me that lets have a group hug and everyone is a winner attitude on this site, kinda bugs me.
Hi TT,
Well I'm glad we came to an understanding and you do seem like a cool guy as I wouldn't say it if I didn't mean it.It is shame that people get treated poorly in real life just because they are different than the masses.I know I certainly don't go with the flow!Anyway that is a cool pic you posted as your hair does look great.Couldn't tell how long it was from that angle but my guess would be mid back.Take care and don't get any tickets driving those fast cars:)Cheers
Mark
Hi DiO,
I've been going to gyms for many years and find that it has benefited me in keeping me healthy all these years. When I look at guys my age around me who have all these health problems I'm sure my weight training has helped me as I have very few ailments.Knock wood!LOL.So you are doing a great thing for your body my friend and I hope you stick with it.Not sure how much it helps the hair thing but certainly it can't hurt:)One other thing as its funny you are at my current weight right now but I'm 6'3", just a tad bit taller.Anyway let me know how the training goes.Cheers
Mark
Did you ever see that Charles Atlas ad? In high school I was the guy getting sand kicked in his face! Lol.
One year I got a weight set for Christmas. In less than a year I put on enough mass that most thick headed jerks decided to leave me alone and pick on somebody else. So it worked.
I didn't keep at it though, I only wanted to get a certain size.
Max L is an avid weight lifter but he's on vacation or something right now.
Paul
----------------------------------------------------
"anyone can look like me" are very deceiving. Not all people that work out hard with weights get big and strong. Some get mediocre results. I am one of those. You must have the right body type to start with and have high levels of testosterone. I have the wrong body type and low levels of testosterone. I did get bigger, but nothing even remotely close to what body builders achieve.
Scott
Yep, I agree 100%. It ranks right up there with those Sea Monkeys, lol.
I was surprised at how fast I beefed up but I never got as big as I planned to.
Paul
I have been doing daily 30 minute work-outs in a Gym since last June, but I have seen no evidence that this has had any bearing on my hair.
Yeah, I used to be really serious about body building, back when I had shorter hair. I still lift a good amount, but not to the extent I used to. I've managed to keep a really good portion of my muscle on, which I'm surprised I can do with all the running and marathon training I do. My advice is stick with it, be consistent, and actually mix things up once in a while and do different exercises for each muscle.
Just for kicks here's a pic of me from back then.
Nah; just wanted to remark that's an impressive build though. It looks healty, as opposed to the Mr. Universe, 'roid freak look.
The "nah" was because I somehow thought I was responding to the parent post, and that you started the topic.
Wow man!!! That is an awesome picture. How long ago was this? Just for kick, you should take a current picture to show the difference!!!
O/T-You mentioned that you run marathons, how do you keep your hair out of the way? What do you do?
It was about 4 years ago, right after I graduated high school. I had some pics from Halloween that showed what I currently look like. I can post them again if you didn't catch them before. As for running, I keep my hair in a segmented pony tail. One single band pony tail works fine for the run, but getting all the knots out afterward is darn near impossible.
Thanks for the reply-you are a gentleman! Hey I do not recall the pictures you are refering to. If you get a chance post them again. BTW, based on your reply you are close to finifhing college, I'm curious as to what your plans are. What's your major? I wish I've had the b---s to grow my hair at your age. Very admirable!!!
I honestly have no idea what I'm going to be doing when I graduate in May. I'm kind of worried about it. I'm majoring in Kinesiology. Here's the pics from Halloween.
Kinesiology? I learned all I wanted to know about that pushing a wheel barrow. Just kidding.
You really do have the whole Conan look, you know that?
When I was in high school I was that much into the barbarian thing. My mom hated it, lol. I had Frazetta pics up everywhere.
I lifted but never got quite that defined. How much do you bench?
I like to spar with some wooden swords I made. Hope you like the pic! I made some helmets since. lol

I haven't maxed out in a long time. I finish off my sets now with two reps of 265. Last time I maxed out I could do 310. I probably can't do that much now, but I'm probably still pretty close to double my body weight. Was that cut from a sword fight? It's pretty gnarly.
Yeah, that's my buddy Nat, he's quick as bat s**t, and I have to be on my toes when I spar him.
I missed a block. It's ok though cause I split his ear once. hehe. He's a chemist now and don't get down too much anymore.
Paul
You are too young to worry about this. Obviously you are an intelligent guy so you will end up in the right place when the time comes. Man, those are kick-a__ pictures! No need to be modest bro, you are in top shape!!! Keep that hair growing and stay in shape. Good luck with the rest of your school year. I'm sure we will exchange message again.
VJ
But not that serious. Anyways, I can't get over the eating part, my stomach must be very little hehe...
I do enjoy exercising tough, and I love dancing, as it keeps me active from my life sitting and drawing all the time for my course. Dancing is also very stress releasing and a great way to be creative!
This is a 2 month old picture or so... Sorry the trimmed out face but as you know I don't show it online anymore =P
Looking good. That's about what I consider to be the ideal amount of muscle for a guy to have. You're doing a great job keeping yourself in shape.
Just curious what kind of dancing you do, anything formal or is it more free form/improvisational dance? I've always liked the idea of dancing, but having ever taken the time to learn how to dance. I had a lot of fun in martial arts, though, for many years, which has similiar benefits that dancing does.
Hello Aerym!
I do inprovised dance, more on the alternative side. I never took classes but I've been dancing and making coreographies since I was very little (about 7-8 years old maybe) - so I love doing it! Anyone can try it, do it at home and get better at it!
Nice hearing from you!
Hey Dio, good that you are doing the weight training. Once you see progress it's a self-motivating thing...keep up the good work. However, adequate sleep, plenty of water and a good diet will be the edge in achieving success in that, hair and mostly everything else.
If you want any further info. feel free to email me on here.
Cheers,
Max
I don't really lift weights per se, but I do love to work out. I have been training to run a half marathon this year, so I mostly focus on running. I also do some light weights, swimming, and some pull ups and stuff to keep my muscle tone since running a lot tends to make people lose too much muscle if you don't cross train. For many years I practiced martial arts, too, which like dance is an excellent way to get a good cardio work out and also exercise your whole body. I highly recommend martial arts for anyone interested in getting in shape and having fun.
I used to work out and lift rather consistenly, but I've gotten lazy over the past year or two and probably gained like 20 lbs of fat, not muscle. I need to get back on it.
