I've been growing out my hair for 9 months. It looks better than 2-3 months ago, but it's not quite there. Do you think that after 3-4 months this awkwardness will vanish ?

Yes it will or very soon after.
Without seeing your hair and knowing you it is impossible to put a precise time on this.
It really depends. The awkward stage can last for a while depending on how fast your hair grows and how curly or straight it is. Usually around a year and half it is long enough for a legit pony tail that doesn't fall out during any active activities.
