Hello.
I have heard mixed things about the maintience of long hair.
The general consensus seems to be that medium hair or hair in the "awkward phase" can be quite the pain.
And verry long hair, like approaching your lower spine, can tangle verry easily.
Now, I have made the arguement that having long hair can actually be eaiser to maintain then the average men's hairstyle. That when you have normal or medium legenth hair, you always wake up with a bed head of sorts, and have to comb or wet it down each morning.
That you have to always use shampoo and then gel to compensate for the dryness and lack of natural oil.
I argued that at a certain length, the weight of your hair will maintain itself.
Also with short hair, you have to always keep it maintained by paying a barber, but with long hair, you can cut it yourself by putting it in a single lock, and giving it a single snip.
Anyways, what do you guys think?
Is there a certain length or style that is easiest for a longhair to maintain?
And if so, might it be easier to maintain then more popular shorter style?
Humm... I suppose I should make this a general intro thread as well.
Names Zenjamin, and im 21 years old. I used to be bald because I didnt want to represent myself as "normal, or capitulatory.
I started to consider going with long hair because my girl said that she liked guys with long hair.
What sealed the deal for me was when I read that "significance of male hair" article.

Simply brilliant and it reflects my philosophy on masculinity completely.
So, im now growing it out.
... But it will be a while before I can call myself a longhair.
Here is me last summer:

LOL. Ok, ignore that last one.
But ya, im not completely set on a ponytail, just something over the ears and out of the eyes.
And I like the ideal of how the beard + long hair combo can give for a very masculine look... it a independent "master of myself" sort of way.
... so ya.
The general question about the easiest maintenance sweetspot legenth for a longhair.
And general into info.
Just my opinion: mid-back length is the easiest. You can easily make a ponytail or braid, it looks long, you can wear it loose and it's not in the way, it's really easy to comb/brush, it's long enough that gravity/its own weight helps to keep it under control, etc.
[b]Thank you. But out of curisoity... is there a way you define "mid back"?
Thats one of those terms that could be defined different ways by different people.
It's about the same as elbow-length or so, half way between your neck and where you wear you pants.
I think it generally depends on hair type. For instance, if you have extremely thick, curly hair, things are usually easier to take care of if they're shorter (not always, mind you, but in a lot of cases). But when it comes to somewhat curly hair, or wavy hair, I've found that the easiest length for me has been about waist length, because as you mentioned, the hair gets weighed down. Some hair loses curl the longer it gets and therefore becomes less of a hassle to maintain. Other people stay curly the entire way and end up with a lot of upkeep because of it, so you can see my point, I think. As for straight hair, some people have hair that tangles easily, some don't. If they have a distinct haircut, that can also impact how badly it tangles. There are a lot of factors. I'd say it depends on each individual person, not just a general "long hair is easier" or "short hair is easier" kind of thing.
Even when hair becomes long you're going to have off days where the wetting it down or brushing it out is fairly mandatory unless you want to go around looking like a maned lion (which can be cool...but sometimes it occurs at the wrong time...like a wedding...). If you have bone-straight hair, perhaps not, but I'm sure everybody has a bad hair day from time to time.
I have to say, though, I have long hair AND I get bed head. It's better since I got the Japanese treatment (though most of the wave has come back in). I take a shower every morning and tail my hair before going into the office; when I'm on the ball I comb out my hair (which makes it bush out) before going into the shower, which helps once I'm in. What's that brush everyone keeps recommending??
