I was wondering if anyone eles here is using Coconut Oil in your hair? This Coconut Oil is in a solid state at temps below 75 and turn liquid at higher temps. I'm trying to find ways to keep it in a liquid state as it would be easier for me to use.
I also read that Coconut oil will absorbe into the hair were as Jojoba Oil just lay on top of the hair. Just thinkin it might help my dryish hair some.
Thanks,
Frank
Hey Frank, I want to ask how actually this Coconut Oil helps. My hair is not that dry, but maybe I should give it a try. However, as I said before my hair type is almost like yours - wavy/curly, but my hair is a bit shorter than the pic you've put as your avatar. The problem is that when it's completely dry it puffs out a bit, not too much but it doesn't look quite good. Do you think that the Coconut oil can help my hair a bit ?
All the best and keep the hair growing :)
Luben
Hi Luben, I think because of my Thyroid poroblem (it doesn't make enough hormone) my scalp doesn't produce much of it's own oil, so I think that's what makes my hair dry. I've tried "leave in conditioners" but they just make my hair feel like straw, Jojoba Oil is good, it helps to kind of weight the hair down and somewhat hold it in place. Coconut Oil will do the same, but what I read it say it can penatrate the hair shaft and help to provide moisture, were as Jojoba Oil does not penatrate but sits on the outside to protect the hair shaft. I just find that oils go a long way in helping me manage my type of hair. I use just about a teaspoon of Jojoba Oil every day on my hair.
Hope that helps.
Frank
To be honest i think without a thyroid problem, thick/wavy hair like this just gets dry. When i wash mine i lose all my natural oils that the scalp produces and it's horrible for like 3 days unless i use coconut oil.
in response to the question - yeh it should make it less "poofy", definitely. also you could try wearing a beanie hat for like an hour or 2, usually flattens it down a fair bit. but the oil should do a good job, just dont use too much - better to keep topping up a little bit that putting too much in and looking all greasy and needing to re-wash!
You could try to denature the oil via excessive heat(boil it) and see if that alters the characteristics. Oils mix well with other oils so you may able to splice it with something with a higher melting point.
Experiment with it!
That's for the reply Cofactor, I've fill the sink with hot tap water and let the jar of Coconut oil sit awhile in it, that brought it back to a liquid, but it would be a hassle to do it evryday. The only oils I have are the Jojoiba & Coconut to mess with. Just need to find something in my room that stays 75 degrees and keep it next to it.
Frank
Sorry, I meant Thanks for the reply. Where's my head today, I better put it on, I may need it!
Frank
You were right Cofactor, mixing the 2 and heating them up did make the coconut oil stay liquid.
Thanks a lot!
Frank
I use it all the time, after I wash and then usually the next day too. It's solid in the jar but if u just work it between ur fingers/rub it in ur hand it turns soft and you can rub it through your hair. I just make sure there are no white lumps left, doesn't take more than 5 or 10 seconds though.
Let me know how u get on. I usually just use a small amount, the size of a penny maybe, but depends if ur hair's longer i guess.
Hi Jude, I kind of got spoiled with the little pop top on this 16oz. bottle of Jojoba Oil. I just pop the top, hold it over my brush sprinkle some oil on it and away I go. I wss hoping the Coconut Oil would be the same, till I bought my first jar and saw it was a soild till you heated it a little. Having a spinalcord injury, I don't have good use of my hands, I've tried puttin oil in my hand (which is a chore in itself) and workin it through my hair which doesn't work out to good. Liquid oil is easier for me, just tring to find an easy way to keep the Coconut oil in a liquid state.
I do Thank You for your reply.
Frank
Oh OK, well I'm not sure if you can get coconut oil in liquid form really, not come across it myself anyway. Pity because I really rate it, replaces all the natural oils that washing my hair strips away.
If i come across anything I'll let you know, in the mean time I guess you will have to stick with jojoba. Does that work well though? Were you having any issues with it or just trying coconut as an alternative for no real reason, just that you ran out?
Hi Jude, Jojoba Oil is great stuff, I've been using it a little over a year now, no issues with it. I just read that Coconut Oil absorbs into the hair shafts and provides some moisture were as Jojoba does not absorb into the hair. Say, I did try what Cofactor suggested, I mixed a tablespoon of Jojoba and Coconut oil together, heated them in a toaster over till the Coconut melted. I took the pan out and after letting it cool for about 4 hrs., it stayed liquid. If I want to mix them this might work.

I found that using Olive Oil worked better for me. My hair is thick and curly (like the original poster).
Olive oil is heavier and flows better than coconut oil. I find it's easier to comb my hair with olive oil.
