Hi,
I am attempting to grow my hair to my waist. I am about 5 inches shy of doing this. I haven't had a trim since last June. The back of my hair is now uneven. The middle is longer than the sides. Also, I have noticed that the ends are getting thinner and stringy looking. Should I have a trim to even it up, or just let it grow. The women the trims my hair does a good job. She talked me out of cutting it short one time, by telling me to trim just a little off first. Thanks in advance.

Get a slight trim just to knock off the stringy look. Nothing else. That's my .02!
NO!!!! DO NOT CUT YOUR HAIR, NOT EVEN A TRIM! Leave it grow and don't let anyone talk you into touching your hair!
With it that long what could a slight trim hurt?
Of course, it is your decision to do whatever you wish with your hair. I believe you are asking for opinions. My opinion is that a healthy head of non-stringy hair looks best. Uneven, ragged hair looks unkempt, and nasty, in my opinion. People will say I am biased because I cut hair for a living, but to be truthful, I have not actually been a "working" stylist for some time now.
To answer your question, yes, get a trim, even several inches if need be. With hair your length, you won't be missing a thing, except for that unkempt look.
I agree with John. DO NOT CUT IT. EVERY HALF INCH IS AT LEAST A MONTH OF RECOVERY.
I would definitely get it trimmed. You will end up saving hair in the long run. The stylist will only cut off damaged hair which cannot be saved anyway. Also, hair does not grow evenly all around. Your hair in the front of your head might grow at a different length than the back, etc... The stylist will trim the hair so all the hair grows at an even length. Trimming the ends will ultimately make your hair look and feel great! When your hair reaches waist length it will look neat and healthy!
"a stylist" says that "Uneven, ragged hair looks unkempt, and nasty". well alright, whatever.
but in my opinion it does not look at all unkempt or nasty; it only looks like it is supposed to without you going and making it look blunt and straight across, which looks very silly in my opinion. when people have hair that all ends at the same length, it looks kind of fake.
Well, that's your opinion, and it is as valid as mine, but since the beginning of your name is punk, I guess we have to consider the source. It all depends if one wants to look decently groomed, or like a punk. {shrug}
. . . which is really funny, and this is why:
i chose my email in junior high because i like punk music and i just really do not like changing around emails, so it really has nothing to do with my appearance. but -- you do happen to be right in that i really do not care about my appearance that much. but if i did, chances are that i would still have gradually ending hair. (because of my opinion)
but hey, have a nice day. :)
