I like to wear my hair in a ponytail now that it's long enough to do that. However, my girlfriend warns me that wearing it like this every day will allow the hair tie to damage it (because it compresses the hair in the same place all the time). I put my hair back wet alot, which she also says is bad (please, no mold commentary; we've beaten that horse to death). My hair ties are the continuous ones (no brass clippy thing) and about 1/8" to 3/16" in diameter, I would guess. Does anyone have anything to add on the subject?
Just wearing a ponytailer will not damage your hair! Don't sweat it!
Think of it this way...a lot of guys with real long hair put their hair in tails every day. Their hair grows no faster than yours. Does their "compressed hair" suffer damage? Nope! And neither will yours!
And no...I won't even touch the mold thing!
;-)
I dare you to touch it ;p
Dosent sound right to me. LOTS of folks wear the same ponytail every day.
I don't think proper hair ties or scrunchies will cause damage to healthy hair, if used with care. If you are gentle with your hair when you put it in and when you take it out. Always comb from the bottom up...
NOW as for people with permed and processed hair, that is a different story!!!...If you already have damaged or especially dry processed hair I would not recommend the added stress of putting it in a ponytail, I have never noticed any sign of damage to my hair from ponytailing.
I make my scrunchies in 100% silk as well as cotton. The silk definitely is the smoothest and if you are at all worried about damage from a ponytail they slip in and out like butter!
I have sold to several hyperboard posters in the last few weeks and so far everyone is very happy with my product!

As long as the ponytail holder has no metal parts, it shouldn't cause any damage. However, what can cause damage is pulling your hair too tight. This can stretch your strands, breaking down their internal structure. Wet hair can stretch approximately 20% more than dry hair. So if you pull it tight when it is wet, then the tension will actually increase as your hair dries. This will accelerate the damage to your hair. Done too much, you will find hairs breaking, usually right along the hairline, as those get the most pulling. In the extreem, the roots get pulled so hard and continuously that they become permanently damaged and will cease to produce hair. This is called tractional hair loss, and is often experienced by people who continously wear very tight styles, such as cornrows. The moral of the story is that in addition to using ties without metal parts, only tie your hair back when it is dry, and easy does it!
As mentioned in my earlier post(see below) I do make my man scrunchies aka Monie's Little Ponies in 100% silk fabrics as well as cotton. The silk is by far the softest and smoothest fabric you can possibly pamper your hair with. I have a selection of colors available, some have crepe finish, some satin, and some jacquard woven patterns which just adds a nice contrast to the plain color. These are made in two thicknesses and so you can pick which you prefer...I also vary the lengths according to my customers specific request....i.e thin or thick hair so you will have the perfect fit....When I first started manufacturing hair accessories back in 1990, I instantly had a slogan in my head I wanted to print on t-shirts, however, coming from a small town I did not think it would be too good for business... but here goes nothing..... and yeah I kinda wish I had done it anyway !!!!

I use scrunchies with the metal clips on them and I have not had any problems with hair pulling. The secret is to make sure the scrunchie is BIG enough to fit your hair inside of. I have found that when you use a scrunchie that is small and tight it tends to pull hair. Look for scrunchies that are big and loose. Pick ones that stretch easily. You will not have anymore problems with hair pulling.
