As I am waiting for my awkward stage to pass (and hopefully it shouldn't take long from now), I keep thinking of my hair everyday and it's become my obsession. I am overcareful with my hair, to the point I'm even not toweling it after washing it.

Believe me i'm no expert but i think that might be a bit extreme. But if you want to let it naturally dry that's your choice. Toweling i can't see would do any damage as long as its not fierce rubbing :P
But yeah i think of my hair everyday to, its kinda hard not to considering it grows out of my head. :)
Lol, Nikola, I'm exactly like you ! I know what you're going through man, but we'll be there in no time ;-). Time passes by quickly, so keep the hair growing !

All you have to do is DON'T THINK ABOUT IT. If you're watching your hair grow it will take forever, but if you live your life just letting things go, one day you'll look in the mirror and see you've reached your goals!
That's the only advice I can give you.
Sound like me talking a year ago, I was obsessed with my progress and quality of my hair.
I read everything I could to find the best hair care routine.
Like you I let my hair air dry, but I do put a towel around my head for a while to let it soak up the water.
Being carefull with your hair is a good thing, you want the best quality hair when it's long. You don't want to end up with longhair that looks like crap.
But don't overdo it, it shouldn't become an obession.
To get through the akward stage I took pictures every month to see that I did actualy made progress. The last couple of months I don't look in the mirror al the time, the hair just there and it will grow. It took me a while to adopt to this mindset but it's the only right one.
In my experience, people who worry and think about their hair all the time end up cutting it. Don't do it, get on with life and let it grow.

Do something else! You've got a life to live, don't obsess over your hair growth. Do things, read books, play music, enjoy friends. Enjoy your hair as it grows and take good care of it, but don't sit there staring at it like you're waiting for a pot to boil!

Nothing wrong with being good to your hair. You should just pat it down with the towel after washing.
I think you should get your mind on something else, if you think about it all the time it'll seem like forever then you'll get frustrated and cut it. I suggest checking on it maybe once a week or so.
As soon as you get used to it you won't really give it a lot of thought, right now it's sorta like a new toy! lol
I see nothing wrong with letting it dry naturally, I just pat mine down with the towel.
