Hi Guys, perhaps some of you just caught the hair shampoo story today on NPR, about how much Americans shampoo, and the "no-po" backlash. Here is a link if you want to read:

food for thought,

The reduction or elimination of shampoo use is a fairly common thought among the members here. For me, once or twice a week seems to work pretty well, using shampoo and conditioner. Thinking about changing to once a week with both, and once with just conditioner and see how that goes.

Is that once a week with both, next week only rinse and condition. Or one wash with both then one with just conditioner in a week :)
That would be once a week with both, and once in the same week with only conditioner. Mainly because I've found that if I go for washing it only once a week, towards the end of the week it starts tangling more and more. I'm thinking the conditioner-only mid-week will help the tangles without stripping out as much of the oils.
I cut back to using it once a week, mostly because every time I use it my hair gets all curly and poofy
You can definitely count me in the "no-poo" category. I didn't get really serious about it until my hair was almost waist length too. I quit because I couldn't find a shampoo without nasty chemicals. Even the Whole Foods stuff had wierd, un-natural stuff in it. I do cheat though--I use castille soap, which is basicly vegetable oil that's been reacted with lye. No other chemicals. Castille soap doesn't make your hair sticky like most soaps. It does leave a slight powdery residue that comes out when I finger-comb, but it doesn't give me dandruff. The key to avoiding dandruff is to realize it's a fungal infection. Fungi like dark, moist places. Thus, focus on drying your hair to avoid dandruff. Rinse and dry your hair after a workout (the sweat re-starts the fungal growth process). The only time I get dandruff now is when I wash my hair before bed and am too tired to wait for it to dry fully. OK, I might also get some dandruff if I go too long without washing, probably because of the sweat problem.
But once you get off the shampoo, there's no going back. I'm chemical/plastic/marketing-free and happy.
Hi Steve, Is the soap liquid or a bar?
-Dan
It's a solid bar.
Hi Steve,
Thanks. I was wondering if you had experimented with Shampoo Bars. I see that there are many brands available. I even saw a shampoo bar blog, by a woman who is trying each and reporting back how it works for her long hair.

Use less then! For out friends on the lower west side...is that spelt correctly!
Shampooing daily? Even with short hair where it's easy to do, that's neurotic.
Yes but if Americans were to shampoo less then the shampoo companies will loose money as well as have to lay off workers and may even need a bailout of their own. We can't have that now can we?
Besides I like my hair puffy.

Great link !
One of the lessons learned on this board is to shampoo less. I only use shampoo when absolutely necessary after heavy work in the sum.
