Hello all,
I have had long hair a couple different times in my life. Once in High school, and once a couple of years ago before changing to a career that required short hair. Due to the economy, things didn't last with that career and I've started the process once again to grow my hair long, and will never again cut it for a job or career change. Ever. I feel that it's a part of who I really am and really want to be. It's grown over the last few months to be about jaw-length, and the goal is to grow it to below my shoulder blades or longer.
One issue I have, however, is what I call a "bald spot" that I've had my entire life, on and behind the crown of my head. It's not really a bald spot but, if what other people tell me is accurate, it's more of the "swirl point" of my hair and scalp. The hair is much thinner there than anywhere else though and even looking at pictures from when I was like 7 or 8, I can see clearly that the spot has always existed like that.
If my hair was just a little thicker, or I had just a little more hair on the top of my scalp, it would be effectively covered. The only way to "hide" it is to brush my hair in a way that causes it to lay over the back of my head, but it never stays that way for long.
I am pretty desperate to find a way to "fill it in" or eliminate it. I've started using MTG and MN, as well as making changes to my diet and supplementing with Biotin, and hopefully that will make a difference. I've honestly had a pretty lousy diet my whole life so I'm sure it won't hurt... heh. To me though, it really does make me look like I'm beginning to go bald in the crown area, despite the fact that I'm not and my hairline has remained steady my entire life.
I am 33 years old, by the way.
Has anyone else experienced this, or know someone who has? It seems like everyone else with long hair hasn't a trace of this, and the back of their head looks wonderful, normal, and flowing. But as far as I go, I feel like, as Dr. Evil would call it, an "aging hipster" who is trying to do a combover or grow his hair out to compensate for baldness... Ugh. I can't stand to look at the back of my head in a mirror. My hair could be thicker in general, which I also hope to achieve, but overall looks fine except for this spot.
What can I do to fix this? It's killing me and my self-image.
Thanks guys. Take care.
its a cow lick
i have one too
Hello,
It sounds to me like you either just have a large crown, or a double crown. Absolutely nothing to be ashamed about! It's the way the hair grows. You can use products to manipulate your hair in a way to cover up the spot you dislike, or to make it appear smaller. A good way of doing this is to hold your hair in position with a comb, and then spray it with a spray gel or wax. I have a double crown myself and this is what I do.
Maybe you could upload a photo and I would be able to tell you whether or not it is actually a double crown. I'm training as a hairdresser, so I think I can identify them!
as ben suggested, what you're describing does sound like a cow lick- I've got one also. in my case, once I grew my hair it kinda got covered up/overpowered, but it's always there- especially when I put it into a ponytail that area is always ready to revolt.
If you're not losing hair in other places I'd say it's nothing to worry about, hair-loss wise. And battling that hair to get it to go where you want will be a never-ending one. ;)
