Hey everyone,
I had a question regarding hats. I may have already asked this before and if so I'm really sorry to be bringing up old news - but I can't remember ever getting any responses on the question. My question is if hats affect hair growth. I heard this somewhere, with the person even going so far as to tell me that wearing hats too much can cause baldness later in life. I'm not sure how much to believe but somehow, it does make sense. I can see how wearing something like a beanie or bandana, something that presses the hairs down tightly and possibly prevents them from necessary air exposure, hinders their rate of growth. Since I'm still in the awkward stage, a stage that's already painfully slow enough as it is, I really don't want to risk delaying my hair's natural growth. Yet it's hard because at this stage my hair is difficult to control and hats make it much easier when going places. Because of all I've heard, however, I've started seriously limiting the time I allow myself to wear hats now.
All that to say, is this a credible fear or just bull?

I wear hats a lot. I don't have any problem and I'm 52. I think it's an old wives tale.
Properly worn caps and hats most likely do not cause any balding or thinning; and actually protect hair in certain environments like hot desert climates or windy areas...
...however, later in life they sure do a great job of covering that natural balding or thinning......HA!
Hi there, Jesh.
You see...Wearing a hat even all day is absolutely harmless to your hair. I've been daily wearing a hat for 3 months already and I can tell you that my hair grows as fast and healthy as before.
However, if you really don't want to wear a hat and your hair looks awkward, messy or poofy you should try washing your hair only with conditioner or using less shampoo than before. I have thick, curly/wavy hair and for me It worked out instantly !
Cheers !

Hats won't make hair fall out of your head any more than socks make toenails fall off of your feet.

I heard that from my father for years. But there is no evedence that it's the hat that causes thining or balding hair, absolutely none. I've worn hats regularly for years and years and have not noticed any damage that could be attributed to a hat. I also have absolutely no thining going on.
Baldness causes hat-wearing; hat-wearing does not cause baldness.
As long as you're not wearing a hat that cuts of the circulation to your scalp that is super-tight, you should be fine.
