i have heard some people say that 60-100 hairs fall out a day, and some say up to 500. i realize it varies, but about how many hairs does the "average" person have on ones head? also, is there a website that gives more detail on the topic?
i realize this does not really matter, but i was just trying to do some math and i got curious.
thanks. :)
Hair density depends upon race and hair color. Caucasians have the highest hair density; the growth rate is average. Blacks have medium density and slowest growing hair. Asians have the lowest density but the fastest growing hair.
In Caucasians, people with blonde hair has an average of 140,000 hairs; brunettes or dark-haired people will average 110,000 hairs; and red-haired individuals will have the least density with an average of 90,000 hairs.
From another site:
Hair Density, Numbers of Hairs, Rate of growth
The average human scalp measures approximately 120 sq. inches (770 sq.cm).
The hair covering varies numerically according to hair colour and ethnicity.
Caucasian hair type: The figures quoted are based on research published by Drs. Erasmus Wilson, Withof & Stelwagon in the nineteenth century and are therefore in inches.
Blonde 146000 hairs, diameter measuring 1/1500th - 1/500th in.
Black 110000 hairs, diameter measuring 1/400th - 1/250th in.
Brunettes 100000 hairs, diameter infinitely variable
Titian (Red 86000 hairs, diameter infinitely variable
wow. thanks a lot! do you remember (or have on hand) the websites you got them from, or any other urls that relate?
also, say someone has 100,000 hairs and loses, as i have heard, 500 a day. the hair will only reach a peak of 200 days of growth, or a little over 3 inches on average. maybe it is supposed to be like 50 a day or something, allowing for around 33 inches, which sounds more reasonable. but i do not know about that.
anyway, thanks again for the great information. :)

The estimate of how many hairs 'fall out' are about 50 to 100 per day. I suspect the lower figure. If you 'lose' 50 hairs per day, that means each hair will grow about 2000 days. That means each hair may grow about 5 1/2 years, or 66 months. At 1/2 inch per month, that means a hair may grow about 3 feet long, which is about right.

Here is a link to a site that has all kinds of "science' info about hair - of course, it is called hair-science. I have it linked through my "BobCut.com" site.

Good luck fulfilling your curiosity.

I asked my dermatologist the same question: 50-100 hairs fall off of the average mans head every day.
