Hi everyone, the ends of my hair is quite frizzy and knotted, but not anywhere else, also towards the ends of the hairs it feels as if they are very rough and notchy, not smooth like they should be. Has anyone any ideas, I do condition to the tips, please don't tell me I need to start combing!! :-)))
Thanks Dave
Try and afro pick and don't think of it as "combing" :)
God help us we should recommend something that begins with "T"
Noooooooo.......
If I had your hair and my ends were a bit dodgy I would continue to condition madly and use an afro pick after some finger combing.
Don't dispare we all find ourselves combing as we get older. (grin)
hope that helps a bit.
Cheers
Kevin
I wasn't even going to mention this, but I did the "t" word myself for much the same reason. I was getting knots and tangles, and the ends had become terrible. I had individual hairs with knots in them even. I did the "t" myself and was very satisfied with it. My hair looks and feels better, and I didn't lose any appreciable length. What happened with me was that I had grown this crop of hair from a medium layered cut, so I had a small amount of hair that was extremely long in comparison to the rest, and I think this was most of the problem.
Hey now! Believe me, kind sir, I can identify with you...I've posted pics before displaying what essentially were dreadlocks. I, like you, was not much of a comber as my hair is just too damn curly to do so. I had to wear the hair in a bun at work and, alas, dreads started cropping up.
I hesitate to say so given the reaction to below posts, but they were getting so damn irritating I lopped them off about two weeks ago. They were growing together and knotting up so much it just plain looked like hell. Like you, I love the natural look but this was just not even managable given my hair type.
My longest dread (when pulled straight) hit my belt. Anyway, I got a cool stylist who gave me a natural-looking cut. My hair is now approx. 5 inches all over and, while at times I have a bit of 'fro, I'm kind of digging the new look as I grow out again. This go around I'll refrain from the bun so much and try to finger comb more.
Good luck!
LOL, --- okay, I won't tell you to start combing... BUT, I will tell you that there is another tool called a, "brush", --- it just might prove helpful (lol)!!
By the way, before I get into my answer to your Q, I meant to tell you how wonderful I felt your update was a week or so ago. The pics were GREAT, --- I just felt bad that at the time I was lurking, because I didn't have the time to comment right then...
In any case, my compliments to you now!!
OK, now for the cowboy hair advise (ahemmmm... clearing my throat to try to sound as officious and hair-haughty as possible - LOL)....
Contrary to current popular MLHH opinion, I don't mind an occasion trim (OMG, THERE'S THAT AWFUL WORD! OH, HORRORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!), --- it's just an issue of: if you aren't doing the "Seach & Destroy" method of chasing down the evil split and broken ends on your own, then going to a highly reputable salon for what some refer to as a light, "dusting" (no, NOT bring out the Pledge and the dust rags, folks) might prove extremely helpful in the end (no pun intended on the word, "end")....
I check over my hair for split ends on a weekly basis, cutting off the individual offenders whenever I see them. My onlly other choice that I know of would be to decide to have my hair not quite as long as it currently is (belt-length), --- because when my hair was more like shoulder-blade length, I don't remember seeing so many split ends.
Not everyone gets split ends. I remember going over to Bill's house one time when Scott (Absalom) was there. Neither Bill nor Scott appeared to have any (well, I guess they each found ONE small split end - lol).
I get split ends, though. I've lessened them by applying a small amount of beneficial oil into my hair ends, and also by not shampooing any more than twice a week, max. But, once you have splits, it's best to remove them, --- that's what you're feeling when you describe your hair as being dry and brittle and snagging at the ends.
Hope this helps (and I hope I don't get raked over the coals for saying the infamous "T" word - lol)!!
Eh non-trimmers? (ROFL)

Very small trims or dustings can do a lot of good while causing one to lose very little length. Of course, the S & D option causes even less loss.
I got a lot of this around October/November last year. My only advice is to finger comb it a lot just after conditioning it. That's when your hair is at it's softest...well in my experience it is. Finger comb the knots out, and brush it as it dries, and after dries.

Been having a very similar experience, especially if I go too long between conditioning. So far my only solution is to avoid putting off conditioning and to do a periodic finger-combing to find and work out the tangles as gently as I can manage.
I was getting 'velcro ends' when I was just water washing. I've finally bitten the bullet and shampoo and condition every day and it's taken care of the problem.
Here is a pic of my "knots" (please see my post just below).
Dave and all,
For my wavy (sometimes semi-curly depending on weather) hair, generous use of conditioner, followed by an apple cider vinegar rinse (about 3 parts water, 1 part vinegar), helps a great deal.
I dab on a few drops of jojoba oil half way down my hair, while it is still damp.
When my hair is mostly dry, and also when I get out of bed, I finger-comb it starting at the very bottom and working upward.
In practice, this all does not take very much time.

"When my hair is mostly dry, and also when I get out of bed, I finger-comb it starting at the very bottom and working upward."
Clarification:
I don't comb it upward. I finger comb with downward strokes, doing just the ends of my hair, and then again starting at point further up, 'til it all looks good.

Hey Dave
If it were myself, in this particular case I would have a bit more than a dusting taken off of these ends.......like say 1/4" which would be back in a month anyway. Besides, you have plenty of hair to spare and you DO want to get to the base of this problem. "If" 1/4" still shows some of this I would even go for another 1/4th inch. My gut feeling is that most probably this will eliminate the problem and you can continue for several years before it appears again.
Take care-
Justin~
Thanks justin, maybe I will consider a slight end trim. Thankyou for your response.
Have a great Easter weekend.

Hey Davieeeeee!
Sorry to hear about your hair troubles but I think Justin hit the nail on the head. You may also want to consider at least brushing just at the ends as your hair gets longer just to prevent this in the future. For me I have to comb/brush at least a couple times daily, especially if I have my hair loose, or I'll wind up with a head full of knots!YIKES!!That's the price I pay for having the really long hair but I can live with that:)Have a great Easter my friend!Cheers
Mark
Thanks Mark, and happy Easter to you aswell, don't eat too many chocolate eggs!

Hi Dave,
I think I'm the last one who should be giving advice on hair care, lol. But I've been using Olive Oil from my ear lobes down. It takes about 4 drops each side. Since my hair is light any more makes it look oily.
Anyway it works for me.

Hey Dave,
It was fighting with that same issue that really made me to start really taking good care of my hair rather than just hap hazardly so as I had been for the previous decade or so. Only in my case, it was pretty much all up and down the back of my head. Personally, I did not go through the dreaded "t", simply because of the principle of the matter. I had just moved into a more protective role concerning my hair. i.e. always in either a braid or in a pony tail with multiple hair bands (clear to the ends in both cases as much as possible), not shampooing as often and conditioning more. It's taken some time, but I notice everyday that my hair is getting healthier and healthier. Currently, I rarely have an issue as I have naturally shed the problem hairs. So far it's been about 6 months since I started protecting my hair instead of just letting it fly around.
What Jason advised is good and will take alot less work, unless of course you are as anti-trim as I am, then it's not even an option.
