Right now, I am at about 10 and half months of growth from bald. My hair is in my eyes, but that is not the bit I want cut. I would like a tidy-up at the back, to remove split ends, flatten it a bit (if possible) and make it the same length all round, or at least more shaped. Comments/Ideas?
(attached is the 10 month pic to give you an idea of where I'm at currently)
My best advice would be to tough it out and just let it grow. You are entering what we call the awkward stage where the hair does not look always looks it's best. We've all been through it and the results you get afterwards are both the wait.
I'm just wondering why you posted this if you are want to visit a barbers, not always the best stylists in town!
Cheers,
John.
Don't cut it. That is not bad at all and it will look even better longer.
Doesn't look bad, I'd say keep it.
Bad idea. Wait til 20 months then maybe trim the back up a bit to even things out if that's what you want. My personal opinion just leave it and no trims unless you have major split.
Part of being a longhair is learning to endure discomfort of the awkward stage and the comments from people. So in short learn to love it as it is.

I know it's tempting to get a haircut to even things up, when I had your lenght I had the same idea. But I learned over here you can better wait and just let it grow.
You hair won't flatten, it will curl more if you trim it. The only way to flatten it is to grow it longer, the weight will keep it down.
Split ends is a good reason to trim, but it's unlikely you've got them so soon. I'm at 19 months and still not a single one.
For the shaping, once your hair is long enough it will be less noticeble that it's not the same lenght everywhere.
The long hair will also blend in with the short, making your hair look longer then it is.
If you still want to trim, be carefull to go to a good salon or else it can end up as a desaster with way to much taken off.
Your hair at this point actually looks good, just keep it side parted for the awkward stage and it will look stylish.
I wouldn't touch ANY of the hair above the nape of your neck but I can understand maybe trimming the back just to let the rest catch up.
However, check out Vincent's hair, he grew his out and it appeared longer quicker becasue the bottom layers grew in untrimmed with the top layers thus giving the hair a longer look...I don't believe he ever trimmed the back and his hair always looked awesome and now he can probably have a sizeable tail if tied back.
I can understand trimming the back but your hair looks fine, doesn't look 1 bit unkempt or awkward at all...reminds me of Beck kinda.
Keep it growing man, don't worry about trimming it.

In the first place, if you want to keep and maintain LONG hair, forget about barbers. They will do nothing but cut your hair short. The next time you feel you need a trim, find a hair stylist in a salon. And find one you can trust. And if you don't get good vibes from them WALK OUT before they pick up the scissors.
Again, forget about a barber if you want long hair.
The barber I'm thinking of going to works as a stylist as well, and does a great job with several women I know. He seems trustworthy.

Good! :-)

Just as long as you can still see where you are going. Some guys use a bit of gel or part their hair in the middle and presto! 20/20 everywhere.

Idea: Leave all at this point alone and just let the hair grow as you are just entering the awkward stage. Hair can NEVER be the same length. This is impossible because of the fact of the nature of how it grows. All WILL fall into place nicely as long as you don't mess with it for at least 2 years.
Think I saw those photos once before a while back. (Either that or I have had a vision that I would be seeing them.) In any case, quite an improvement over a bald head.
How do you know that you have split ends in the back? Curious about that statement and what to they look like?
Yes, I have posted that picture before about half a month ago, as my 10 month update :).
I have a bad habit of playing with my hair! I often curl the ends round my fingers etc, and have found quite a few split ends towards the back. Also, my mother and girlfriend (both of who fully support my choice to grow my hair, and much prefer it to the old bald look!) have said they can see lots of split ends at the back.

I would leave it alone, it actually looks quite good at the moment. Maybe a little spray to calm it when you want to look yiur best.
The awkward stage is always a pain but you have to go throug it.
Scissors and barbers especially are best avoided for two years at least.
The dreadful awkward stage... that brings back painful memories. Judging your hair based on the photos you posted, it looks a lot better than mine used to at that point and I did not alter a thing. So my advice is to have patience and let it grow without any trims for the next 20 or so months.
I have wore my hair at least that long since the 7th grade.
I graduated in 79 and in 81 I started a 4 year enlistment in the army and of course they cut it. I had no doubt that I would grow it back out as soon as my enlistment was up.
Well, when I got out I found that it took some getting used to so I had it trimmed several times before I just decided to endure it and let it grow.
My advice to you is, if you really want long hair then leave it alone and let it grow. If you can put up with it until your "bangs" get past your chin then it gets a hell of a lot easier.
Another thing, it seems to me - at least in Alabama, most of the "get a haircut" remarks are heard during the awkward stage.

I live in London, UK, and I don't get too many "get a hair cut" comments. In fact I used to get more when I was younger and had medium length hair! (before I shaved it off for about 5 years).
I think it looks great right now. I think that trimming the back will only hinder you on your quest for long hair.
Just give it time and it will sort itself out.
