Whatsup guys I'm just curious as to what your main inspiration for growing out your locks might be. I haven't really posted much on this sight but I regularly check here for advice, and I thought it would be cool, to hear people's inspirations. Personally I've always liked the idea of having long hair mainly because I've been a lifelong huge fan of Rock and Heavy Metal music, and I just find it to be a defiant stance to society's norms. Currently I'm growing out my hair from a buzz cut for about 4 months now, I've only grown my hair in the past for about a year and 1/2 and never made it further. This time I plan on going for serious length though. Anyway here is a pic of one of my main inspirations, the great stoner metal guitarist Scott "Wino" Weinrich, if you haven't heard of him check him out.
...for the thread most often re-visited by new people to the site. Please don't think I'm making fun of you, Huntarian, because I can easily understand the thought process that brings it up. With the way the board operates, it can be difficult to track older posts that no longer show on the "front page" for new members.
And the quick answer for me is.... nobody in particular. I just like longer hair.
Yeah I realize I'm not the first person to ask the question but I'm just curious. I personally think it's interesting to hear people's inspiration for growing long hair. I understand you don't need a reason to grow your hair, but for me it holds great significance. Hair is an extension of your personality and spirituality in my opinon.
Well, for me, the reason I wanted to grow my hair long was because I am a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism (http://www.sca.org), and I wanted to look more like the Scottish Highland persona I was trying to emulate.
This time around, I just miss the variety I was able to have when I had long hair.
Ahh, a fellow SCAdian... where at, if I might ask??
I'm in the Barony of Dun Carraig, in the northern reaches of the fair kingdom of Atlantia. In my case, the prevailing style for my persona would have been short hair and a beard like Oren's, and neither is really an option for me.

"Long curls that looks like black candles" is what I'm going for.
Nothing in particular but just decided to grow my hair for a change and not worry about what others think.

I think my main 'inspiration' at first was the price of haircuts. Being a poor student, I was weighing everything up at the time with 'how many beers can this get me?' and I put off the haircut until one day a friend told me, 'hey, you have long hair!'. And I sorta stuck with it.
What inspired me to grow out my hair? Well on the 1st attempt more then 20 years ago when I was in my mid-teens and in high school, Mel Gibson from Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome and Arnold Schwazenegger in Conan the Barbarian encouraged me to grow my hair long. Unfortunately I cut it all off after nearly 2 years because it was in appalling condition with split ends galore and looked a goddamn mess.I just didn't know anything about looking after long hair back then.
2nd time around it's more of a spiritual - personal thing - I just got sick and tired of having a boring short hair cut cycle and wanted to "cut loose" and experience something a bit different. An acquaintance that we call Shampoo Luke had very beautiful long silky Blonde hair (like he had just stepped out of a Shampoo Commercial -Hence the nickname!) and it reawakened something in me to grow my hair out after a long time with short/medium collar-length hair. Plus I thought at the age of 38 this was probably going to be the last chance before middle age to experience my full potential to be longhaired.
Growing my hair out is personal - it doesn't "stand for anything", I don't identify with the Metal Crowd or any other statement except the right to be an individual in an often highly impersonal mainstream society.

Good answer. I totally agree with you. I'm not really trying to fit in with the Metal crowd either, it's just that some of my heroes are great musicians and I've found some inspiration from them.
I've always liked long hair on other people, but was never allowed to grow it when I was younger. After graduation, I decided it was time to give it a go. I grew it for three years, so it was about shoulder-blade length. Anyway, we got a new boss at work who I didn't get on with and I started looking for another job. I was told I'd have a better chance of finding one if I cut my hair, so stupidly I did. I spent the next ten years regretting it and started growing it again a few times, but I got to the awkward stage and cut it each time.
Eventually, I became self-employed and one day I was running on the treadmill in the gym, watching one of the music channels to ease the boredom. Anyway, they were doing a Red Hot Chilli Peppers special, and I thought to myself, "My hair used to do that," as I watched a guy with long hair run across a desert landscape, hair flowing in the breeze behind him, and I decided to stop cutting it. That was just about four years ago and now my hair's waist length.
It came to me in a vision....
lousy, high dollar chop job....
He said yooz gonna look like my 'lil 'ol boychild dude.

Hi Huntarian,
I wanted it long since I was probably 5 and I remember asking my mom why boys couldn't grow their hair long. She didn't like that question one bit! lol
Later it was Conan and paintings by the Dutch masters.
It good to hear yet another buzz cut grow out!!! Thank you for improving the scenery!

My single source of inspiration to grow my hair was my wife. She always liked long hair on guys but married me despite the flattop I had at the time. Eventually I caved and started letting my hair grow out. Now nearly six years later I realize as silly as it sounds that my long hair fits my personality quite well... Plus now my wife likes to grab my hair and say, "Play that funky music, white boy!"
