I've had little luck doing a standard half-tail with a hairtie. Every time I try I start getting nasty tangles once I go for the second or third loop in the tie. So instead I use some plastic clip barrettes I found at Wal-Mart.
Here's another of my standard mirror shots showing how my hair lays with the clip.
Thanks for the update Jim, and the tie certainly works with your hair and looks great.
Cheers,
John.B
And because MattB has asked a couple of times about these clips I've mentioned, I finally got around to snapping a shot of the clips themselves. Laid one down sitting open to illustrate how they work. You just slide it around the segment of hair, then clip the open end thru the hook. They stay in my hair pretty well all day. In fact, the earlier pic of my hair was after a full shift at work.
Looks Great....
...the half tail is my favorite hair style on longhair men (and women).
Thanks for Sharing
Walter
Right up there on my list, too. :D
Yeah, I've had the same problems when I've tried the half-tail myself. Luckily I've found a friend with the double braid. The other day I tried a braid in a half-tail...didn't work out too well. That just may be one hair style that requires a second set of hand to get done, but at any rate, I'll try it again sometime and if I actually accomplish it I'll show you the results.
Daniel
After I get a little more practice braiding my wife's hair, I may have to try the double braid on my own. At least that way I won't be trying to work behind my head. Thanks for the suggestion. :D
Great half tail pic and thanks for the info on the barrettes.Certainly a nice option and easy to use.I've seen some women with quite fancy barrettes but the Wal~mart ones do get the job done. Thanks again for posting your pic my friend.Cheers
Mark
I've tried some other barrettes, but many of them would pull or snag my hair. These are all smooth plastic, so no snags or pulls. Also, while many other barrettes are brightly colored, these blend in nicely, which tones down the "barrettes are feminine" argument.

You have one fantastic mane, JSFrodo. Very few guys have such nice hair and it probably even makes women jealous.
That barrette works very well on your hair. I may have to try one myself.
Scott
I know nothing of clips n bands n stuff because my hair don'y need em that much.
But what i do know is that is a savage mane. All you need now is a huge black stallion and an Axe!!!
I've got a red Mustang and a collection of various swords (you can see them on my MySpace page)
Will that do?? [GRIN]
Jeaolusy is a sin but i'm sure you've earned your spoils.
Gotta love a Mustang.. Mm mm
You have some of the best hair I've seen on a guy. It seems your wave pattern is pretty similar to mine but your hair is a lot thicker and yes, I'm jealous!
Wow you should be very proud. You have amazing hair and I think the barrette in it looks great. Keep it up. How much longer do you want it to get?
Thanks. No specific goal, pretty much letting it go where it goes.
Thats great. It looks amazing tho. If mine looks half that good I will be very happy. Do you wear the barrettes alot?
I use them a fair amount to keep my hair from falling into my face when I'm not wearing it in a tail.
Hey JS...that is a great look with the barrette...I might try that myself sometime. Damn you have great hair! Cheers,
Max
regardless of luck, you have really great long hair! :-)
Looking just great Jim! That clip works very well for your half-tail - looks perfect.

WHOA! That mane of yours is seriously not only very long; but, also amazingly thick and full!!!
Looks to be in EXCELLENT condition, too!!
I've always liked half-tails. But, I wore my hair that way more often back during the time of when still going through the last part of the awkward stages
Thanks for sharing!

Yeah I know what you mean. I love wearing my hair in a half tail(even before I knew the style had a name) but that third loop is also a bitch to get out. I have had to cut them out, uh... the tie, not my hair.
The clip looks good in your hair but I think I'd need a lighter colored one. Don't know how that might fly down here in Alabama, lol.
I have been meaning to ask you something. I know you grew your hair after your retirement from the military and was curious what your old navy buds think about your hair style now? Hehe. Just so you know, I think that is one of the coolest hair histories I've ever heard. "See ya later barber shop!"
Paul
Couldn't tell you, really. Did a cross-country move shortly after my retirement for my first post-Navy job, so haven't seen many of my old shipmates since. The few I have seen haven't had anything negative to say, and one is also growing out his hair and beard, although he's had much more luck with his beard than his hair. He seems to have hit terminal at somewhere between "below the collar" and "mid-shoulder blades", and he's thinning quite a bit on the crown.
Thats a neat way of restraining but keep that amazing mane look that you have.
