Hi all,
I've been lurking on this board for a few months now, so I figured I might as well come out of the woodwork!
This is my first time growing out long hair. In the past I've kept my hairstyle somewhat shaggy-ish, but now is the longest it's ever been, so I feel pretty excited treading into new territory.
I've wanted long hair all my life, but endless arguments with my dad proved this desire futile. I respected his desire and cut it (well, I had no choice, really) until I got my degree and started living on my own. I'm certain many others here can relate to my story.
Even now, he still states at every opportunity that I won't valued in the workplace with long hair. I work in a research lab which doesn't discriminate against longhaired men. In fact, one man I know just got a promotion!. Yet another is a manager and is well-liked. I suppose he was wrong about that!
My goal length is mid-back, but I'm almost certain that it will increase, considering how much I'm loving my hair now.
Well, enough out of me. Thanks to this great community for encouraging me to fulfill my dream!
great to have you here. Glad you have found this community who's intent is to support those desiring to grow their hair long and giving encourgement.
Your own hair is looking fabulous already and you are blessed with a fantastic hair-type that should look ever so awesume when long.
Happy for you that at long last you can realize the dream of having long hair.
Again welcome, and thank you for giving all of us a first update of where you are right now.
Justin~
Thanks for your warm welcome, Justin.
I enjoyed watching your "For Men With Long Hair" video series on YouTube. Your compositions are also very inspiring to me as I am an aspiring musician/composer. I can only dream to be as talented as you are, though!
Thank you Dan H.
Really though, I didn't do anything........it just happened. And those videos? Yikes! No rehearsals, no patience. I just do them and let the chips fall where they may. But the latest one on my channel? Sure proof that my brains have fallen out. But, everyone needs a good laugh now and then. LOL :-)
Take care
Justin~
That video certainly had me laughing, haha.
I'd think that fantastic head of hair would help in keeping your brains in place :)
Greetings Dan, welcome to the board. You will find much encouragement and inspiration here. You have a great hair type and it looks nice already...it can only get better from here. Originally my goal length was mid-back and I have just reached that milestone largely with the help and encouragement of folks here...so having said that...welcome and keep it growing!
Cheers,
Max
Thanks for your kind words, Max.
I remember your last update pic looked great! Long hair certainly suits you well.
Hey Dan,your picture looks awesome and I welcome you as an official poster now:)Your hair looks great in colour and texture and will be very cool as it lengthens.Just think if you grow it out long enough you can have a mop like mine on your head someday!YIKES.LOL. Other than that I'm glad you are now in a situation where forced haircuts are a thing of the past.Just keep you dad at bay and make sure he doesn't hide any scissors in his back pocket.I do hope your dreams come true my friend.Cheers.......
Mark
Thank you Mark for the compliments and encouragement.
And yes I do hope my hair looks as good as yours someday :)
I'll keep my eyes open for suspicious shiny objects, haha.

Greetings, Dan H. You have great hair. Straight hair it easy to grow long, and in my opinion, looks best at waist length or longer. Best wishes in your longhair journey.
Scott
Hi Scott, and thank you for your encouraging words.
Your lengthy mane looks great on you.
Welcome!
I can relate to that. My father said the same thing, and then one day I showed him a letter of commendation with a pay raise. The previous generation always has trouble understanding the next.
Hi Steve, and thanks for your reply.
I'm glad that employers are finally lessening the discrimination of longhaired men in the workforce. I would like nothing other than to show my dad a letter of commendation just as you have!
Your hair in your avatar is about the length I am hoping for. If it looks half as thick and healthy as yours, I'll be quite pleased.
Hi Dan,
Welcome to the hyperboard, and I am so glad that you have joined, and shared your photo with us. Your hair is in excellent condition, has lots of shine, and you are off to a great start. You have the type of hair that is easy to grow to super long lengths. All of us look forward to supporting you in your dream of achieving your long hair dreams!
Welcome aboard!
David
Thank you David for your encouragement and support.
I hope you keep your hair growing as it looks fantastic!
Welcome to the board, Dan;
Your hair looks great and has a texture that will get you through the "awkward stage" easily. It is great that you have a position where it is not an issue..too bad your Dad can not see past that.
I look forward to following you progress.
Thanks for Sharing
WWT (Walter White Tail)
Thank you Walter for your kind words.
I'm glad to hear that the "awkward stage" will be a little easier than I expected. I have always cursed my straight hair as it looked so flat and boring at short lengths...now I feel it may work in my favor!
Keep your hair growing. I think that you're able to pull the longhaired look off very nicely.
"...I think that you're able to pull the longhaired look off very nicely..."
Thanks Dan....we old folks need that encouragement too !!
Walter
Welcome to the board Dan.
We need more of you long haired, shaggy, dreamer types out there, who create the ideas, inventions, innovations, etc that create the jobs the "conventional" workplace takes so for granted!
Great looking start on a fine head of long long hair.
- Oren
Thank you, Oren, and great progress on your hair growth. Your beard looks awesome!
It's usually the longhaired folk who seem to have a knack for seeing things in a different light than "normal" (haha) people. By going right against the norm, we certainly stand out in the crowd. I hope that employers continue to see what kind of benefits we can bring them.
Hey Dan,
Your hair will look awesome with some good length. I wouldn't worry about the workplace thing. I am also a manager at my shop where a couple of other longhairs are in good positions as well. And I'm sure that there are plenty of longhairs on this board with fantastic careers. Take care! -
Rick
Thank you, Rick, for your compliment.
It's good to hear about another longhair in a satisfying career!
Welcome to the board Dan H.,
You've got a great start on your hair. I went through the same thing as you did with your dad. I've been working on my long hair for 16 years now (has it really been that long since I moved away from home? wow) 11 years since my last cut (and that was to get a job with a snotty company) I've never really had a goal length in mind, just whatever the good Lord saw fit to allow me to have. I've abused my hair for a long time along the way though, but over the past few months I've followed some of the advise on this board (not all, yet) and my hair's health has really improved even without a trim to git rid of the damged ends.
Anyway, welcome again. By the way, I really like your name!
Daniel
Daniel, your hair looked great in your most recent update pics and I'm glad it has improved so much. I've also found that the advice given here has helped my hair.
Thanks again for your encouraging words.
Welcome along Dan, just let it grow and before you know it you will have a fantastic long mane, really thats all you need to do.
Good luck on your journey, see you around,
~ Dave
Thank you, Dave.
I remember seeing your pics you put up recently. I really like the look you pull off with your wavy/curly hair.
