I have written in the past about the conservative area in which I live, sometimes going several days without seeing another long haired guy. I have also commented about how my hair is probably longer than most of the women at the church I attend. It tends to be an effort at times to go it alone.
This morning at church services a guy I know came up to me and told me that I was the topic of conversation at his house this past week. It seems that for a while his kids (early to mid teens) had informed him that he needed to ditch his "nerdy" look and let his hair grow, and pointed to me as an example. His wife was in full agreement evidently, as he said that she was grinning and nodding her head the whole time. So he has decided to buck the trend and give it a go! This is the guy that has been the head of our voter's congregation for the last several years, and he is a local attorney, so this is a big step for him to take.
And I have noticed that one of the other Dads from my daughter's dance team at the high school is now sporting a short ponytail. Could I have started a crack in the conservative outlook around here?
Just made my day today; thought I would share.

Hi George,
Thank you for sharing this genuinely cool story with us, and it is wonderful that you appear to be serving as an inspiration to others, to bring much needed change in the attitude of ceratin folks towards long hair. Although my community is nowhere as conservative as yours, I do see more guys growing out their hair than I used to see, and let us hope this trend continues!
Thank you for sharing,
David
I loved reading this story, George! Very inspiring in many ways...
I often think about the stereotype of what a longhair is "supposed" to be like as a person. In my mind, most longhairs I know actually do NOT fit into any of those particular typical categories (like surfer, biker, rocker, drug addict, etc.); but, especially YOU!!
One of the fun aspects of coming here to MLHH for me is meeting other longhairs who don't fit the stereotype. Although I may not be as politically conservative as you, there are many aspects of me that ARE considered "conservative", --- like, my tastes in music, for example (I love Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Big Band Swing music, Dean Martin, Peggy Lee, Della Reece, and several other classic artists from that era)....
All this goes to show: "you can't judge a book by its cover!"
Thanls for being an inspiring original, Big George, --- you are truly, "one of a kind!" Don't ever change!

.... I'd peg myself as fairly conservative. Too boot, I'm about to be ordained a priest for the Roman Catholic Church - and continue growing my hair out for as long as my bishop allows. You'd be surprised by the number of priests I've met or heard of with long hair... even in seminary.
Its encouraging to read other guys' stories about proving the stereotype wrong: that long hair is NOT somehow a deviancy or sign of some problem. Rather, its about self-expression and a legitimate choice of how to present yourself.
Peace,
Djm (the 'D' is for Deacon.... for 37 more days!)
I just takes one to get things going, I would feel good if I were you also.
I have conservative friends one of whom has longish hair
(falling on shoulders)
congrats your a trendsetter.
