My last full haircut was a crewcut, from which this pic is an evolution.
OK, so I put too much cream in it this morning and it has that "wet" and stringy look.
I'm getting there, though. I'm definitely in the transitional phase at this point. I can feel my hair starting to be able to move independently when I shake my head, one of the early signs that the hair is getting longer.
My eventual goal is mid-back.
I'm having a slight trim done tomorrow at the hair salon, to keep it shaped.

If you're aiming for mid back length, what good is a trim going to do besides prolong your transition phase?
Don't trim. I've been through the awkward stage myself, thought about a trim every now and then but realised that if I want long hair, cutting isn't going to get me there.
Just find a way to keep your hair looking neat without cutting and you'll get your mid back length much sooner.
Good advice from Pat, trimming will just prolong the goal.

I'm just doing the trimming to deal with split ends and uneven hair growth during the transitional period. I'm happy with a cut every couple of months. So far it looks pretty good compared to the last time I went through the transitional period.

You're going to have an awesome mane of curly hair before too long. I'm not sure you need to do much trimming though. With curly hair, it really doesn't matter what you try to shape it into; the curliness prevails and does whatever it pleases.
BTW, about your user name -- do you wear hearing aids? I'm thinking about updating mine. If you do, what kind do you have, and do you like them (do they work?)?
I have Rexton in the ear hearing aids. They seem to work OK.

Matt:
I just got my first pair of hearing aids about a month ago -- who knew that playing in a marching band (in front of the snare drum) for years and being a school music teacher, besides, could damage one's ears? I should have. (All you musicians out there - protect your hearing!)
Anyway, I wear "Be" by ReSound and they are tiny, comfortable and they work. (I only have to say, "Pardon" once or twice a conversation now - even in a noisy environment!)
DeafPiper:
Love the curls...of course I would.

Awesome! You will look very medieval!!
Yep, I had very curly locks when I had long (shoulder-length) hair in the past.
