Hi all !
So..from where to begin....
I started growing out my hair 11 months ago. I have very thick wavy/curly hair. In the very early beginning of my hair journey(tho I'm STILL at the beginning), in the first couple of months I straightened my hair with flat iron often. Well i guess too often. There were 2-3 months that I straightened my hair every single day. Which was a Huge mistake ! I stopped using the flat iron In the end of January this year. I realised that my hair was getting dryish and finally decided not straighten or blow dry it EVER again ! I bought some conditioners, used some oils and two months later my hair felt like it was cured. My hair felt(and still feels) really smooth and Moisturized, like really thick, healthy hair.
However, a few weeks ago I found that in some spots I have damaged ends. Some of them are just split, others are breaking off. Luckily they are not all over my hair, and one would never notice that I have them. But the big problem is that there are not in one particular spot on the hair. There are few over here, and some over there, it's just hard to find them all and cut them. I'm VERY mad at myself, because if I never used that stupid straightener I probably wouldn't have ANY of those nasty split ends.
I just don't know what to do. Should I just leave them be(since they are not that big), or I should search all over my hair to find every single one and eliminate it(althought that will be quite difficult).
Also, I've found some products and hair masks that would "eventually" stop the ends from splitting further, but I'm not sure if they're any good ? Should I give them a try ?
Thanks guys for your time and I WILL come out of the shadows and show a pic of my hair, but I guess that would be next month, When I'll be celebrating one year progress !
Cheers !
Luben
You have much to deal with here. Guess it would be best to post a photo so we could all see just what the hair looks like now and then go from there.
Unfortunately I'm in a similar situation. I'm glad you posted a thread on this so that I can join yours instead of starting another... =)
I've never straightened or dyed my hair, but instead just condition everyday/shampoo once a week, using Garnier Fructis. About 3 or so months ago I found a ton of split ends, it seemed there was a split on every 1 out of 10 hairs. Me and my girlfriend spent hours on some S&D, haha. Seems like we cut most all of them off, until finally it became difficult to find a single split end in any of my hair. Well now it seems they're back, and I don't quite know what I could be doing wrong. I'm pretty much ready to change conditioner brands... which is funny because I've used Garnier for 5 years. It's worked well until recently, and I've been kinder to my hair in the past 2 years, more so than the first 4 years. I also don't like Aussie though.
Is it possible that dull scissors can cause this? Or sun damage?
Yes, to both questions. I can't speak to much about dull scissors as there hasn't been a pair get anywhere close to my hair for over 11 years (not even to S&D) But I do know alittle something about sun damage as this is one huge issue for me. In years past I just let it happen, because I have to be out in the sun (to treat a skin condition) or retreat to a tanning bed when it's too cold to lay out and get a tan. Both are pretty much huge factors in hair damage. I don't know what the answer is unless we take Justin's advice of wearing a bathing cap while out (or also in my case the tanning bed) but that takes away from the coolness of having the long hair in the first place.
If your conditioner was working fine until recently, it may not be the conditioner (but don't rule it out completely either). My guess more than anything, (and this is the case for me) is that your natural oils are not getting all the way down your hair to the ends and they are drying out and spliting. Might look at your routine and determine what you can do to move the oils down your hair. I don't know if your using a boars bristle brush yet or not, but if not that would be one of my first moves.

I usually condition everyday and shampoo as needed/usually a bit more than a week. I also use jojoba oil on the ends a few times a week. It does seem dry, I'll have to figure out something soon.
If I was you i would not worry to much about it right now. just wait until your hair is past the akward stage and then consider a small trim.
Hi there,
As Justin says post a picture and let's see and perhaps help with some advice. Now don't go and do anything silly like trimming as I would let it grow for a while longer.

you are talking to someone with natural wavy/curly hair.i used to chemically straight my hair and flat iron it..
i started using PURE coconut oil on the end of my hair after deep conditining 3 times a week..i stopped shampooing, didn't brush my hair when it was wet, waited till it was dry to use a boar hair bristle brush,i then used olive oil treatments once a week,i also trim once every 2-3 months and i see a big improvement in my hair,it costs about 10 dollars a month for all of this.
I also suggest putting few drops of ...oil (olive, jojoba, coconut you name it - any of high quality) every time your hair tips seem to need it.
