There weren't many longhairs I could spot in the new Star Trek movie that came out yesterday when I saw it; in fact, all the Romulans were bald.
But if you did see it, did you like it? Did the plot line make sense? I was having a hard time with it, reconciling it to the original series.
I probably shouldn't even ask as it might spoil the plot for some who intend to see yet haven't seen the film.
That's hollywood for you and the lower west side!
I'll see it at the cinema in a couple of weeks when all the others have seen it and trekkies have been. Nothing like having a whole screen to yourself!
Cheers,
John.B
Thats exactly what i do.. Let everyone get the big rush out of their systems. Love an empty cinema. Makes the movie more enjoyable.
But will check out the movie even though i've never watched a full episode of star trek in my life.
My plan as well.
Paul
Yes I saw it and really liked it. Yes the plot was interesting and if oyu can remember in the series, there is a series where Captain Pike is in there. Do you remember that part? write me if you don't want to give it all away LOL Later, longhairedone Steve
Haven't seen it yet. Not sure that I will. I saw the trailer and it didn't really inspire me to see it. It looks like your stereotypical summer action blockbuster with the usual cinematic tropes and cliches; after you've seen one, you've pretty much seen them all.
I loved the original 1966 series. It's an integral part of my childhood, along with Star Wars (Episode IV, as it's now known), Planet of the Apes, 2001: a Space Odyssey, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Kikaida, Space 1999, Battlestar Galactica, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, etc., etc., etc.
INCIDENTALLY, the actor who plays Kirk, Chris Pine, can be seen with long hair in Bottle Shock:

Now if Kirk looked like THAT, I'd definitely go and see the new Star Trek!!!
I seem to recall the last Star Trek TV series "Enterprise" which was a flop. I think they've run the game to the end on it and are simply trying to milk it for all it's worth.
Can you imagine Lucas going further with Star Wars. He's made all the episodes into films and it's a classic and it's done. Imagine if he wrote another book and carried on something like return of the darkside? It could go on forever and loose it's luster in the process.
People like their mythology to have a beginning and an end not to go on forever. Sadly creativity and artistry take a back seat to $$$$.
I'll wait for it on DVD and rent it or do pay per view.

Bah humbug...don't you like theatres (oh HM spelt way)and all of us have posh barns!
Cheers,

The first time I heard about the idea that there might be a series (i.e., not until after *The Empire Strikes Back* was released), I'd heard that Lucas had projected NINE stories, including a group of three sequels as well as three prequels to the main trilogy. I guess he thought better of it.

I didn't like the way they used "technology" to move the plot. You don't arrive instantly at Vulcan from Earth using warp drive. It still takes some time. I also didn't like the transwarp transporting. There have to be some limits to what is possible in the immensity of galactic space. The original series respected that. I understand the need for suspension of disbelief but this just pushed things too far.
I didn't like that Scotty was reduced to a role of comic relief. That wasn't what the original character was all about.
I hated the transporter special effects.
I loved the portrayal of McCoy. I thought it was spot on.
The opening scene with the Kelvin was done really well IMO.
I don't like the changes to the original canon but I do understand the need to reboot things.
I'd rate it a 6 on a 1-10 scale.
I never got the impression they got there instantly, but that they just skipped over any "boring" stuff because it would get in the way. A function of JJ Abram's pacing. They did spend some time on the way to link up with the fleet (which they never completed), but only because time was needed for the Kirk-Spock showdown, I'm sure.
I wouldn't mind the transwarpporting if it somehow was a one-off event, but the way it's written folks would soon be beaming all over the galaxy in the blink of an eye (dang it, when I was a child we had to WALK to Vulcan, and it was uphill both ways, through ion storms!).
The transporter was an extremely powerful device already- giving it this level of capability would make it very difficult and limiting to write stories that can't all be solved with it. My guess is that they'll forget it happened in any sequel, or (far less likely) mention it but make sure it's hobbled by very specific circumstances.
---------------------------------
I'm a long time ST fan and I thought the reboot was fun, thoughtful, contemporary and put some life into a series that's been kind of dull for almost 20 years.
Sure, it changes some of the details, but it's honest that this is happening in a new alternative universe. I'm looking forward to what they do with the next films. I never go to movies, but I'm happy I went to see it. It's worth seeing on a big screen.
Just one opinion.

I didn't think there was any legitimate reason for the changes made. It also had a plot hole large enough to send a starship through.
The storyline they used insured that the story could not take place. The technology that was used came from the Vulcan Science Academy .... oops, that's not there anymore. Even more important, all Spock has to do to save Vulcan is not try to save Romulus - which isn't going to be saved anyway.
This is a problem with most stories that involve time travel.
Could you spot *any*??
All the business about "alternate timelines", but not too much to keep from ensuring that no man *ever* has long hair on *Star Trek*.

now now lets not be too hastey.
actually in star trek the motion picture, while mr. spock
was on vulcan trying to purge himself of emotion, he actually had kinda long hair. :)
Yeah, you're right--I did think of that. But I only ever saw a grainy photo and I couldn't be sure.

Don't forget Worf!
D'oh--! OK, I'll give you that one. Just wish there were more...

In the next movie, they need to warp forward in time and fix things like they were. Warping in time is a cinch for any good Star Trek crew.
And in movie no. 2 (Wrath of Kahn), Kahn had a mullet!
