Hey guys and gals,
Many of you may not know me but I used to be a daily poster/replier.
I have a question which I have asked before......What do you do whith your hair while you sleep?
It seems that I am damaging my hair more in my sleep by leaving it loose then during the day.
Also here is a picture of myself at a math conference that I help on wave propagation through non-linear slab nodes.....its a great subject to read at night ;)
As well as a picture of me giving my talk.
Peace and thanks

Hi Clayton, surprisingly the answer is in that photo. Using 5 or 6 hair bands along the entire length of your ponytail should give you the protection that you need.
Scott
Very true, that is what I've been doing unless of couse I have my hair braided (which in my opinion is superior to multiple hair bands, but not everybody is as talented as me with the ability to braid my own hair without help...lol)
;)Daniel
Before going to sleep I always make it into a braid. In a braid it keeps your hair from getting tangled and damaged from moving around at night and is much neater when you get up in the morning.
Hey Clayton!
Hairs looking great, nice colour.
Hmm maths definetly not my subject. Unfortunately in school i had a bad maths teacher who intimidated everyone. If you didn't know an answer you were publicaly humiliated. Still to this day i freeze up even when i asked by someone a simple Maths question. I'm only 25 so I'll definetly study the basics more for when the kids come :D
as regards to sleeping i just have it loose. Not as long as yours yet, but i do wake up with allot of tangles.
see ya around...
For the last while I've been putting my hair in a segmented tail making sure that the top tie is low enough that it's not pressing in to my head when I sleep. I find this helps with tangles, heat (summer is starting soon I hope but we've had some warm days), and with not having to move it around on my own.
I did have success as well with double braids (one on each side of my head) but unfortunately it was quite a shock to my partner and caused a lot of belly laughter from her at a rather in-appropriate moment :D

Good to hear you had success with the double braids. That is my favorite (as if you couldn't tell by my avatar)
That is one reaction that I haven't had though, I guess you just took her by suprise.
Daniel
I failed to mention that sleeping with double braids will not be for everyone. Although you won't be sleeping on your hair if you have double braids in, and you will wake up with almost no tangles (if any at all) The braids will lay across you neck causing some level of irritation for those not used to it or those with really long hair. It doesn't bother me at all. But I imagine that if Scott did this for example, he'd wind up with his hair across his neck then still be laying on it behind him. Doesn't sound like a fun experience to wake up to. I'm really borderline here with that regard, because each braid will lay across my neck and then reach down to the bed on the other side, but not far enough for me to lay on. If I gained another 6 inches, that may cause some disturbing awakenings.
Daniel
I slept with double braids a couple of weeks ago and it was fine! I didn't get strangled!
Usually I sleep with my hair loose, I just put it away from me, on the pillow or somewhere.
P.S. if you wonder about the length of my braids -as I'm not a frequent poster- I'll attach a pic.
Regards
Alessandro
It would have alot to do with how much a person moves around during the night. I for one toss and turn all night long unless I happen to be extreemely exhausted. I'm not totally sure, but I think I get more exercise in while I'm asleep than I do awake. If you don't toss and turn much during the night at all then there would be no problems at all. But I for some reason roll every few minutes so that can cause some issues. Anyway, loved the braids on you, they look great.
Daniel
Badass braids Ale.
Cheers Dave
Hi Clayton,
Great to see you on the board again as it has been some time.Your hair looks fantastic in both pics and as a matter of fact I ponytail mine the same way with two ties close together when I go to the gym.Certainly looks very familiar. My hair though is at waist length but I can get away with just the two ties.
As for your question I simply leave my hair loose at night but I put on a t shirt that fits rather snug so as to pin my hair between my back and the shirt.Since it fits snug the hair more or less stays inside and I have few tangles in the morning to take out. Most may not like this method but for me it works well.If you try it let me know how it works for you.
Hope you are having a nice weekend and do stop in more here if you can my friend:)Cheers
Mark
I now segment my ponytail into about 4 parts. Does wonders for the tangles in the AM.
Well my thing is I sleep on silk pillow cases. I am not a fan at all of silk sheets at all, but your hair slides or moves better, I am not sure exactly what but I know I have a lot less problems with it in the morning. Good luck!
What do you do whith your hair while you sleep?
I take my hair off at night and place it in a plastic bag. Haha, jk, I know man, bed head can be as bad as hat head. People nicknamed me hh (hat hair) for awhile until I started using a flat iron with studio straitening cream. I don't like to do this all the time because of the potential damage.
As for me, I am in the braiding (single braid is enough) camp. right now my hair is too short to braid, but when it was longer in the past, I braided it at night.
I used to sleep with my hair loose, but right now I wear it in a ponytail. This makes my hair look a lot better in the morning.
I don't know if it reduces tangles because I only comb my hair in the shower. But I guess it does.
Hey there Clayton, we never had cool teachers/lecturers like you when I was studying, looking great buddy.
I was HOPELESS at maths, I have a creative mind instead.
As for the sleeping question, I just leave mine loose, and it pretty much looks exactly the same in the morning as it did when I went to bed, unless its damp of course.
Cheers Dave
ive had hair down to my knees before and what i always did while sleeping was put it in a simple pony tail.
I leave mine loose and have no issues other than a bit of breakage once in a while. One other factor is the quality of the pillow case you sleep on. Some cheaper fabrics can cause damage over time as well as pull on your hair. I've heard some say longhairs should use silk or satin pillow cases so the hair slides easily when you turn over. Sounds reasonable although I have a high thread count cotton one which is fine for me.

Hi Clayton,
My answer to your above question is that I've tried EVERYthing imaginable, --- hair down, up, braided, bunned, segmented ponytailed, etc., etc...
I prefer wearing it down at night; but, recently I've found that if I put it into sort of a "loose"-style bun, that this is the easiest on me (and my hair) when I roll and toss & turn at night. Regardless of whatever you decide is best for yourself, I've found that having long hair will always be an issue of having to be more aware of its presence than during the days of when I had my hair short, --- and yet, I wouldn't trade my long hair for the world, even if it means a "wilder" night's sleep (LOL)!!
Your pics look great, Clayton, --- and your hair is looking TERRIFIC!!!

I just wanted to say THANKS to all who have replied. I swear that as soon as I get more time I will become a frequent contributor once again.
Peace
Clayton,
Welcome back, and a great looking shot of you!
I have over two feet of hair and usually tie it back with five soft cloth hair ties, spaced a fist-length apart.
Not a single snag or tangle when I get out of bed.
