Hi everybody,
One of my friends came down yesterday, I hadn't seen him in a while. The last time we spoke he told me he was finally going to grow his hair out. Well, here he comes after about 4 or 5 months... with a buzz cut, again! Arggggg!!!
Oh well, whatever. But of course I started cracking on him. "What the hell happened to your head?", "Yep, gotta be a man to wear long hair, huh?", "Just couldn't handle it could ya?", "Nnah, longhair ain't for sissys?" hehe. (It's ok, I've known him for 15 years or so.)
Anyway, he said when it started getting over his ears it felt like he was wearing a boggin all the time. Lol.
Jeeze, that would feel pretty damn weird. I don't get it though, mine don't feel like a boggin. How about the rest of you?
Paul
Help me out here, Paul. I tried looking up "boggin" but didn't find a definition that fit the context. I'm guessing you're referring to what we in the Midwest call a stocking cap (or watch cap)?
And no, I never got that feeling either while growing my hair.
Chris
According to the urban dictonary (linked below) the most agreed upon definition is;
putrid; grotesquely ugly or disturbing; vile smelling
goh! that's absolutely boggin!
So I would suspect that he thought it felt grotesquely ugly or disturbing. If that's the case, then no I never felt that way. Long hair is just too cool for it to feel boggin.

This article is a quick synopsis of "boggin." It comes from "toboggan," usually in reference to a sled, but it also can be a hat, like a hood, a knit cap, a beanie, etc. It's a regional dialectism. I suppose the connotation is from where one would wear a warm hat to ride a sled, a toboggan, and the hat worn for this activity assumed the same name. The explanation sounds specious and ridiculous, but this is often how language reappropriates words for different purposes.
what the H is boggin hair????
Paul,
I don't ever recall my hair ever "boggin" me when it was at gettin-past-ears length.

Hey Paul! After reading the posts and kind of thinking I know what "boggin" means, I would have to say at times I think I felt that way, but not all the time. Happily that period has been left behind. Hope all is well in your world.
Cheers,
FIR, Max
If you've had long hair for a long time, you are totally used to it being over the ears, on the neck, the back, etc. When one first grows it and has never experienced it before, it takes a while to get used to it. Sounds like your friend didn't give it long enough.
A boggin is a hood-type knit cap, yes?
Hi Matt,
Yeah, I tried to explain that to him. Maybe he should start in the winter.
When he was in middle school he wore his hair a bit long, I think a mullet kind of thing but he had to cut it. Guess why? The hair hating school board. In fact, he was the first one to tell me about that crap. This was about 15 years ago.
Oh, thanks for helping out with the word definition!
Paul
It's not the terming for visiting the loo then!
Whoops, the word "boggin" must be a southern thing, maybe even local.
What I'm referring to is more commonly called a toboggan. It's a knit cap that is normally worn in winter. You know a ski mask... without the mask!
I'm sure that wearing one in the summer would certainly be annoying.
