With the exception of a handful of bands, most of these groups have short to very short haircuts AND the biggest groups like Limp Bizkit and Staind(neither of whom I can stand) have shaved heads.
What the youth need's is another Beatles. a group that performs uplifting songs, not this depressing crap about suicide.
The Beatles were revolutionary for their times. their hair may not be considered long by most people's standards on this board, but up until they invaded America most kids had crewcuts or not much longer.
once the hair started growing it didn't stop!
anyone old enough to remember those times?
Not all of Limp Bizkit's stuff is depressing, but Im not really into them. Im a heavy metal man (and 17) and I mean REAL heavy metal-Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Metallica, Van Halen. I know what you mean about the lack of long hair. Lack of talent too, but Creed arent exactly making a good name for long haired men.
Yes, even the great Eddie Vedder has given in and now sports a mohawk. He vows to keep it until we stop killing people over sees. Poor guy, he may end up wearing the thing for years... Its ok though, because Stone's growing his hair out again...
Ah yes, Mr. Vedder. Shame too he had a great head of hair.
Silverchair's Daniel Johns has some nice long hair again. It looks great. check some pics out

I hate to come off as an asshole in my first post. But most of the bands mentioned here are just mainstream crap. My primary hobby is listening to music, most of the bands I enjoy have long hair :-)
Some of which are: Opeth, Vintersorg, My Dying Bride, Nokturnal Mortum, etc. etc.
Great board, I have found much useful tips here :-)
I remember those times. In the 70s the growing of hair was a form of rebellion. Most young people today are very patriotic, and don't feel the need to rebel against their country. Of course, many young guys still rebel against their parents, and many times this is in the form of a shaved smooth head, piercings, tattoos, etc.! Haircuts and styles are cyclic. Longer hair appears to be making somewhat of a comeback, but there will always be those who prefer short hair for its ease of maintenance. I see today as a "be who you are" kind of world, for the most part. However, there certainly are those corporations and schools who enforce dress codes, which include forbidding "extreme" hairstyles. While many performers are shaving their heads today, there are still some who have the long hair; just far fewer than years ago. Times change, people change, styles change.
Punkers are notorious for hating Long Hairs.
I recall back in the 1980s attending a Circle Jerks show and there were some straight-edgers there who threatened to kick my ass and called me various names because they didn't like the fact that I had long hair.
when I gave them the peace sign that really infuriated them, but I had no idea why they were that way.
not all Punks were like that, but I think the antilonghair history of certain elements within the Punk underground influenced many of todays modern rock bands attitudes toward long hair.
I decided not to attend any more Punk shows after the incident and played it safe by attending Dead shows instead where older hippie types congregated.
I'm sorry to hear that about the Circle Jerks show, but in the 90s, with the rise of several straightedge bands with long hair (Earth Crisis, Catharsis, etc.) there is no longer animosity between punks with long hair and punks with shaved heads. The number of longhaired punks is still small, but as I look around, I can see a growing number.
hmmm. there are a lot of short hairs and shaved heads at punk shows (i was one when i was still in high school and forced to cut), but i have actually seen a decent number of people, including males, with long hair at these shows, and the whole conflict thing never seems to have come up . . . yet.
but hey, maybe it is just my area. i do not know.
Maybe it was like that back then but nowadays I think it is the opposite. Although there are less "punks" nowadays I think that they probably accept longhairs more. Punks try to be different from others and not fall under the "norm" category.
Yes, I too have noticed less bands have long hair today and like in Smashing Pumpkins, not all the band members have long hair.
Some of our colleagues in our Entertainment Desk make fun (friendly fun) of my long haired colleage who writes about Linux and is a Linux programmer by training.
In the very early 1970's I read a newspaper story where a stylishly long haired British executive said that the long hair trend will last 40 years.
Well that was about 30 years ago and horrible as it may seem, it looks like his prediction may turn out to be true.
Since the bands influence the hairstyle, could we see the demise of long hair in another 10 years??
Anyway. I was at an Apple Computer exhibition yesterday and saw plenty of longhairs among the exhibitors, including a young managing director and a young creative director in a digital video production company and I took a picture of both of them for use in my story, deliberately making sure that I got the managing director's pony tail in full view so that I subtly convey the message -- "longhaired guys are creative."
On a more optimistic note, I think and hope this trend is cyclical and the current lower number of longhairs is related to the postmodern mindset of everything goes and everything is relative.
In the 60's and early 70's longhair was a badge of rebellion and opposition against the Vietnam War, corpratism and even capitalism but with that central focus gone with the end of the Vietnam War, some hippies have since become yuppies, others have cut their hair and joined the corporate world, the punks have arisen in reaction to long haired rock bands with massive amounts of equipment and complex songs and so on.
It could also be a reflection of the harder times since the hippies appeared at a time when North America and the western world were at the peak of their post-World War II economic boom. Jobs were plentiful and the middle class felt secure.
Punk is a working class reaction to loss of job security and relative affluence and harder times in general.

In recent years the bands are wearing their hair shorter to buzzed on avarage.
However, I've noticed a sharp increase in the number of IT professionals with longer hairstyles.
this is a good sign for anyone entering the computer industry who happens to be a long hair.
Also it could become quite conceivable that the standard image for professional businessmen could also change and many long hairs will be CEO's of many corporations.

Yes dude, I am. I was born in 1951.
I am a former "hippie", who still has most of my hair, though shorter than it used to be.
Peace/Love and all that goes with it.
I blame nu-metal =p
Brandon Boyd from incubus let his hair grow out again and its awesome. Even though they looked a lot cooler with dreads.
Long hair is alive and well on TV! You just havn't checked the right places. Tune in the cable channel CMT (Country Music TV). The Grand Ole Opry is chock full of long hairs, as are many of their videos. Check it out! Your antique longhair, Hagar-the-Horrible
