Im new to growing out long hair but I am currently working toward growing it to at least mid back length. My hair is just shaggy now, no real long length yet. Anyway, for my job they usually do not like guys to have hair down past their collar, however I think I should be able to get away with it as long as I have it pulled up above the collar. Any ideas on how to style my hair once its long to keep it up above the collar for work?
HOw do u guys style your hair for work?
I'm regrowing now and at about 6 inches (no way to hide it at this point), but before my cut I had nearly waist length; nobody would EVER guess that at work as I pulled my hair into a bun everyday...that keeps it off of the collar and conceals the freakish length as well : )
I wouldn't call waist length hair freakish. Distinguished is a much better word.
Oh, I don't know. We used to call ourselves freaks, you know. It really meant someone who had most of the hippie trappings, especially the hair, but who still lived in mainstream society, since the word hippie had by then come to mean someone who had dropped out of normal society and lived in a commune or the like (although that's not the original meaning of hippie, but I don't want to waffle on long enough to bore you unduly).
LOL...I don't mind be labeled a freak once in awhile ('cause, honestly, I aspire to it sometimes but never quite "get there"). I was half-joking with my word choice, but trying to emphasize just how much a bun will conceal length...if folks from work saw me w/my hair down, they were always astonished : )
Most days it's in a low ponytail, every now and again (when my wife is up early enough to help) I'll wear it in a braid.
I would recommend a ponytail or a bun when it gets longer or using some kind of gel or a cap during the "awkward" phase.

My hair is near to waist length and as a programmer wearing it all day long in a braid I don't have any problems.
I started wearing a ponytail as soon as I could, that was with 8 months for me. Only the back fit in back then but it was neat for work.
I wear mine in a tail at work, most of the time. It tends to get in the way when it hangs down and it seems this style is more readily accepted by the fuddy duddys.
I often let it down at lunch especially if I'm going to eat out. Once in a while I wear it in a braid.

A lot of business people think they don't like men with long hair, but what they mean is they don't like men with BAD hair. Your best bet is to go the extra mile with grooming: conditioner, elimination of end splitting, neat ponytail some of the time and so forth. While you don't have to be confused with a woman, I've always found my hair was better received if it looks very good and is in a commonly seen, simple style, even if the style is normally seen on women. People tend to respond well to people who look their best, long hair or short.
