Well guys, some of you may or may not remember me - I was most active while Wolfeyes, Sorted, and Michael Odle were regulars here. By the way, if any of you know what happened to those guys or how to get in touch with them, I'd appreciate the knowledge.
Now, on to business. I officially started growing my hair after my last real haircut in July of 2002. I had long hair all the way until Yesterday; May 22, 2009. I sat down, and my mother cut my ponytail off and my brother took a number four to my head. Mom kept my ponytail, saying she might donate it later on, but she wanted to keep it for now (It was about the length of a loaf of bread).
Now before you guys get alarmed - I'm going to grow it back. But here is my motivation.
My teenage years are well behind me now. I'm 23. I started growing my hair at 16. That was a good run if you ask me. I wanted to start over, because as a teen I was very rough on my hair and was almost always getting hit in the head with limbs or briers in the woods. My hair was long, and I still got lots of compliments, but it was awful ratty.
Now that it is one length all over, I'm going to leave it alone and let it do its thing. See, this time around, I know how to take better care of it, and I know which products work, and which don't. I also know how long it will take to be what it was. Only it will be better than it was.
When I grew it out the first time, I trimmed it myself several times along here and there for various reasons and it ended up having that "cut off even" look. This time, I'm just going to forgo trims and try to take the very best care of it I can. If my hair grows out from a buzz, it will have natural layers, because the hair in the front and sides takes longer to reach the tie than the back. I might have a mini-mullet for a little while, but I don't care.
I'm blessed with LOTS of natural volume, and my hair certainly has as much spirit as the rest of me. So I'm going to enjoy it while it's short, and I'm going to enjoy it even more when it's long again. But the main point is: I love my hair. Isn't that what this site is all about?
I'm alway sad when someone cut his long hair. But anyway, you seems to have a strong motivation :) And starting "from scratch" isn't a bad thing in my opinion.
So, good luck ! I hope to see some fabulous updates from you in the future :)
Vivien
Hello Ivix,
It sounds like you have very good intentions. And if you decide to donate it, your choice becomes very honorable. It is very important to have not just long, but healthy strong hair as well. I had a mini mullet as well for a number of months too. That sucked!! haha but it's gone now and it feels much better. Anyway, It will be fantastic to watch your hair growth over the months and years. Please post updates soon so that we can all enjoy your journey with you. Take care. -
Rick
See, this time around, I know how to take better care of it, and I know which products work, and which don't.
Would you mind sharing with us the products that work for you? I'm still experimenting and have not found a very beneficial product. All shampoos dry my hair out, so im going to try out castille soap, and I am also looking into a good leave-in conditioner. So far, the best thing for my hair that I have found is...don't wash it.
In my experience, castile (pure olive oil) soap has done wonders for my hair. It makes my hair hair soft and smooth, but not oily at all. The soap has also given my hair more volume and thickness. It acts as a natural conditioner that gets absorbed into your hair very quickly, so a separate product is not needed.
I wash with the castile soap every day and condition wash once a week (for me, my hair starts getting oily after about a week; the conditioner takes care of the excess oil).
Hope this helps.
Thanks Dan! I know what you mean about your hair getting a bit oily after a week or so. Do you notice that when you just use conditioner, your hair just soaks it up? in other words, you really have to use a lot to get it over all your hair. very unlike shampoo which bubbles up and just sort of froths all over with just a small amount. It seems like when I used to shampoo and then condition, i would only have to use a really small amount of conditioner, not anymore! Im curious if this is just me or if others have experienced this.
Ok, let me get this right. You haven't been here in years but you come back now just to tell us you got a buzzcut? WTF?
I don't think you know what you want. Maybe you need to get drunk as a dog and think about it.
Paul
Let me attempt to explain this without becoming angry at you.
I still pay attention to what goes on here, I just haven't been an active poster. I have definite reasons for doing what I did, and the purpose of this site is to provide natural longhairs with encouragement. I shouldn't even have to remind you of that, and you're quite lucky you've not been flagged for your attitude, which was much uncalled for.
I know EXACTLY what *I* want, and I don't drink anyway, thank you very much.

No buddy, I just don't want to hear from yet another ex-longhair about his BIG haircut. And that, my occasional posting friend, is what the consensus seems to be here.
If you decide to cut your hair, I don't care. I just don't want to hear about it.
(Well, maybe if your a regular and you live in Texas and can't find a job but other wise... not really.)
As for drinking, I have one or two about once a month. Does it make you a better person because you don't drink?
Paul
We'll see if you whistle the same tune as my hair gets longer once more.
I had long hair for 2 months shy of seven years. I'm starting over because I believe I can take better care of it this time.
If I want to grow it out again (and I do) it is this board's obligation to support my decision, by it's very nature.
I can understand your desire to remove damaged hair. I just question whether it was necessary to cut all your hair off to achieve that goal. How about posting a photo of your hair at its longest?
I certainly wish you the best on your present journey to long hair.
I have the pics, but they are not on my computer. If I can find a way to get them on my comp, I will post them.
It wasnt really so much to remove the damage, as to just start all over. It's sort of a spiritual thing.
Whoo hooo! I can whistle "Song of the Valkyries", can you?
Sure, I support you to grow out your hair. Don't get me wrong on that account. I would support the devil himself if he decided to grow his hair out. As you stated, supporting longhair is this boards natural 'obligation' right?
I believe what put me off about your original post was those massive capital letters, "BIG HAIRCUT", who the hell wants to see that here? Really?
We have had a lot of those "I got a haircut" post lately. They hack off their hair and then come straight here to tell everybody. Yeah, such a great idea that is.
I am not the first one to comment negatively about this trend. But all of a sudden, I'm the only one. I guess it's that "James gang" residue.
Paul
Sorry about the rude way I titled the post. I was here when I decided to grow it out the first time, and I want to be here as I grow it out now.
I didn't say you were the only one to comment negatively about the subject, but it's apparent you were the only one to comment negatively directly to me. I'm not mad, and I don't think badly of you.
My hair has already come out between a quarter and half an inch in two weeks. I'm not even going to trim it, and hopefully, it'll be back at a decent length before the end of the year.
It's cool Ivix, I know you didn't mean it that way. I'm thinking that you were just horsing around.
I do hope you stick with it this time and we'd all like to see a pic.
That would also give you a good reason to think about it if you start eying the scissors again. lol. Just come back and I'm sure we can talk you out of it!
The James Gang, oh boy. James Raymond was a previous poster who got angry with me over something stupid and quit the site then got his hair cut. At least one of his friends left with him. Some here seemed a bit sore at me (but maybe I was just being paranoid).
Anyway I felt his resentment at me was misplaced. He was angry because I called some flame baiting troll a "Hair Nazi", my favorite nick name for someone who discriminates against longhair. (I know, "don't' feed the trolls" I just can't help it.)
Simply put, I flamed him, James got mad, go figure.
So "James gang" denotes those with a similar bewildering viewpoint.

Don't worry about it like you said it grows back and if you can leave it alone it's all one length and what a great time to enjoy the new buzz cut and just let it grow all summer long. Glad to see others doing what I just got doing last week on Thursday down to a four but working on growing it back out again.
