Hey guys,
My problem is thus. My hair is totally unruly. I wash it and condition it daily, and this gives it nearly uncontrollable bounce. It almost looks like an afro it puffs out so much. I use the "10+" grade hair gel, but it usually does nothing more than make the top layer of hair hard ON TOP OF the afro. Do you guys have any suggestions? Please be gentle; I'm a newby!
1) Embrace the wildness of your hair and flaunt it, or
2) Try a gentler gel and work it into your hair (L'Oreal Melting Gel is a good product.), or
3) Don't comb your hair when dry, this accentuates the fro-ness, or
4) Try tieing it back if it's long enough, and if it's not, additional length will tame it down as gravity takes control over the ever-lengthening strands.
I say enjoy it! I have the exact opposite of a fro, pin straight, flat always lay down type hair, I wish my hair had more body or was just a wee bit thicker, but I've come to love what I was given. :] enjoy your hair.
I think afros and big hair are pretty cool actually.
Your hair prbably isn't that look and just began the awkward stage.
Stick with it and don't cut.
Also, a pic might help us help you.
Pomade has made all the difference for me. I've got similar hair that turns into a basketball-shaped poof after any kind of activity, humidity or movement more rapid than breathing.
Sigh.
It does end, however. I found that after about 10 months, I had enough weight to keep the poof to a minimum. Keep at it: the awkward stage does end.

Try washing your hair less often, or using conditioner only. That should help to make it less flyaway. Other options are to use a little oil (such as jojoba). Rub a couple of drops between your palms and then smooth it through your hair. Don't use too much though or it will look greasy.
Where do you live?
I visited the Oregon coast after growing my hair and my hair got big. It was the humidity I guess...but it became puffy all while we were on the coast, but returned to normal after leaving the coast area.
My hair is much longer now....doubt if it woudl get puffy at this lenth.....just keep it growing...
Man, I would love to see a pic of that wild hair!
Personally, I think you should just love your hair the way it is. I do think you wash way too much. Twice a week for me, anything more and I'm a walking fuzzball.
I have always admired long, board straight, dark hair. Mine, as you can see, it quite the opposite. I hated it at first and tried to straighten it and considered dying it but most everybody liked it. So finally, I just learned to like it too.
However, I did marry a girl with long straight dark hair. Whoo hoo!
