Hi,
I've been checking out this site for a while and figured it was about time I post a question. I've been growing my hair for about a year, and I'm frustrated to say the least. I can stretch my bangs down to my mouth (approx. 6-7 inches in length, can tuck behind the ears, but not too well), and the back of my hair is almost to the bottom of my neck (just got an inch taken off there, which I shouldn't have done because now I have this odd bell shape thing going).
Now, I realize I have slow growing hair. I've read that for the average person hair grows at about a half an inch per month. I think I'm at the slower end of that spectrum.
My hair on top, including the bangs, seems to grow at a much slower rate than the rest of my hair. I mean, maybe its my eyes playing tricks on me. I know the hair at the back is lower on my head so obviously it gets further down. But, could thinning hair or some other hair-loss related thing cause my hair on top to grow slower?
Also, I've found conflicting evidence on the whole "trimming your hair helps it grow faster." I guess I've been doing my own experiment because I've been trimming the hair at the back the whole time, and I haven't cut my hair on top or the bangs once in the last year. It's like the bangs are growing so slow and the hair at the back grows relatively quickly.
It's almost like I just answered my own question, but I just wanted to see what other people thought.
Either way, I'm still in that awkward hair phase, which for me has lasted pretty much the entire time. haha.
Just let it grow and stop trimming, it's as easy as that!
Hey Dave !
Well if your bangs are 6 inches long that means your hair grows at completely normal rate !
Hair grows approximately 6 inches in one year, so your hair is just fine.
Thanks. It's funny, I never measured my hair until I was posting this message, and then I was like, huh, it's about right for a year. I guess it just feels like an eternity because it's not where I want it to be. Oh well, in a year I'll be happy. ha!
Hey Dave.....I hope you are not trying for my title of the slowest growing hair on the MLHH ! HA! I have not had to change my avatar in ~6 years
Be patient, it will get there.
Hi Dave,
Your hair appears to match mine in growth - an average 6 inches a year. So I don't think your hair is slow growing at all just within the normal range. (yes there are some lucky freaks in a small minority that can grow an inch or more a month) I too wish to have faster growing hair as does almost everyone else here at MLHB. But it does teach one thing - patience and commitment and the time and effort it takes to grow out hair.
Different racial groups grow hair at different rates, The Asians hair grows the quickest on average, White peoples are on average 6 inches a year, whereas people of African descent only grow 3 inches a year on average. (info from an online hair encyclopedia book)
Cheers,
Duncan
Hi Dave,
I also have slow growing hair, or it sure seems that way.
Do not listen to anyone who says "trimming makes it grow faster". Bull, they told me that as far back as middle school. It's a phrase created by hair haters to trick us unto cutting it! What happens next? you go to a salon and they cut off way more than you wanted! I'm telling you man, it's a short haired conspiracy! lol.
Seriously, think about it, if you cut it then it takes even longer to get there.
Paul
Hello Dave,
I believe my hair was about where your's is at a year of growth. But I do understand where you are coming from. It feels like I had some really good growth for about 8 - 10 months, now it feels a little slower. BUT I am positive it is a mind thing. When I am feeling like this I like to bust out the pictures of my long hair journey. I think if you look at your pictures from a couple of months earlier, you will find that you are still growing at a good rate. Take care my friend. -

Hi !
6-7 inches. One year, 12 months, half an inch per month, you're not particularly slow, in my opinion. A slower growth on the top could be a manifestation of our, men, thinning problem, even if you're not on the balding way. I suggest you to do massage and brushing in this area to stimulate the scalp and the growth. And stop the trimming for now.
Good luck !
