Yep, I've got the little buggers running around in my hair, making me itch like mad!!
What do I do guys? there are some really horrible looking chemicals on the market but I would rather go a natural route to be honest.
Any tips? oh and I am really NOT a dirty grubby person, I caught them off the kids I think.
Thanks in advance.
~ Dave
Old wives tail that they like dirty heads - in fact it is quite the reverse so need to worry there!
I would suggest a quick go with a modern shampoo - chemicals and all simply to get rd of them quickly and effectively. I would be concerned that so-called natural methods are both slow and not fool proof.
Thanks UK, I might yet have to go down that route.
cheers Dave

Hi Dave, perhaps eating something they don't like will work. I eat lots of raw garlic and I have never had head lice, even though I have been exposed to them. My best friend and his daughter both had lice. I came over and visited and sat on the same couch, but never got lice. On a hike with my friend, he would get many ticks on him with none on me. It may work for you.
A word of caution here: Don't eat raw garlic on an empty stomach. It can cause severe pain. Eat it with food. 3 or 4 cloves per day will probably work. After eating it for a few days, it will ooze from your pores, and the lice will probably leave.
Scott
Thanks Scott, I will try that, I did go through a period of eating raw garlic, but always found that I had meetings the next day and didn't want to upset anyone!!
I did find however that as my body got used to the garlic after a couple of weeks I didn't smell of it, a friend said that my body had purified itself. Have you heard of this? I know its an anti-bacterial and cleanses the lungs, which is very advantageous as a cyclist.
I do pick up ticks aswell btw!!
Thanks for your help,
~ Dave
Hi Dave,
Sorry to hear about the nits, we had a thread on this last month
the post number is 256081 search it in the archives and you'll find some useful ideas in the replies.
Cheers
Kevin
thanks Kevin, will do.
~ Dave
...and lose the kids, maybe? HA!
"...I caught them off the kids I think..."
Olive oil to your scalp to smother them, then comb out the nits with a nit comb. You'll have to do it regularly for a couple of weeks, but there are no nasty chemicals and your hair will probably be in better condition than when you started. My friend's whole family successfully treated it this way, and two of them have mid-back to waist length hair.
Cool thanks Antinous. Do you wash the oil out after a period of time, and how oily/greasy does it leave ones hair?
Thanks, Dave
One of the big advantages of this treatment for you is that you would have a very hard time getting a nit comb through those curls without a lot of lubrication.
Do this on dry hair. This is what my mother did with my sister. She used mint oil and coal oil though. Coal oil or Doke oil as it's called when mixed in will not only kill the bugs by smothering them but Doke will also stop the itching part which can damage hair if you scratch your scalp.
Thats my fear Dougboy, I have been nit combing, but it really can't be good for the scalp or hair.

Truthfully though Dave...and Im not trying to buck the trend here at all. Because I am and have always been a firm believer that natural is better. It is for the most part. Besides doing the bedding, and clothes and washing everything or putting everything in the dryer, your curls are going to be really hard to work around without much damage.
The main ingredients in most commercial products for lice removeal are harsh because they are drying. Long hair will suffer, but surfing (Salt water is also very bad) will result in the same dryness, and or knots.
I would buy the commercial product. Eradicate them (One use is often enough) and use it on your children and family members as well. I would then follow up with the 15 minute oil treat ment. Pull the oily hair straight and comb the evil out of it. You will gain the benefit of actually killing them all and avoid them coming back. The oil should rehydrate the hair, and offer the secondary effect of getting the rest that might have been missed...although unlikely. I would followup with hot oil treatments until your hair is back to good.
Thankyou for your time and help Dougboy, I may as you say zap them with the chemicals then keep them in check the natural way.
Have a great weekend.
~ Dave
An article was in today's paper on this. See the link.
Just go surfing! That way, all at the same time you can kill the lice, have fun, and show off your mane!

I was suprised that you have gotten head lice. I thought that everyone on this board are lice-free, and that head lice are mainly on young children. Since my hair was short most of the time, I never had any lice problems, and I still do not today. At this time, the only natural solution I can come up with about head lice is simply picking each and every strand of hair to pull off the lice. Once all the lice had been picked off, wash your hair. It also helps to avoid dreadlocks in your hair since you can work on each and every individual strand of hair.
Matthew
I'm sorry Matt but I have to disagree. Picking off each and every nit is almost impossible. It would take forever. And if you miss even one you will soon have another case of lice. It's what I heard anyway.
My kids caught them once from school and we had to take a crash course in lice killing.
Otherwise, your post was pretty funny. Subtle ;-)
Paul
Yeah I'm just a dirty little kid at heart y'see Matt ;-)
OH MY GOD!!!! Dave?! Where have you been hanging out, buddy? (Whoooo hooooo! Dave's got cooties, Dave's got cooties...)
Just kidding Dave!
I never had them but my kids did once. We got rid of 'em with that over the counter stuff.
Got to set something straight here Dave, head lice are attracted to clean hair more than dirty hair. Hope that makes you feel better. And cats and dogs do not carry human head lice.
Oh yeah don't forget to put up all your stuffed animals for a while, they infest them as well. Uh... you do have stuffed animals don't you?
Paul
Paul, Yeah, the deer head on the wall has a bag over it as we speak!!
cheers, Dave
Sorry to hear about this problem Davie but from what I've read you have been given some good tips already.Since this never happened to me I can't add anything other than hoping whatever you try works quick and easy my friend. One thing I did hear once is that if you play your stereo with some good hardcore metal at full volume that would blast them buggers out.Now you know you have to sit right in from of the speakers for maximum effectiveness:)Guess this won't make the medical journals I suppose.Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Mark
LOL, yeah Markie-babes, Metallica at full volume should kill 'em all (see what I did there?) ;-)
cheers buddy
Dave
This is the best stuff on the market, and it just happens to be natural too... Not avail here in the US, but you can get in in EUR. http://www.delacet.com/
Yep, I've got the little buggers running around in my hair, making me itch like mad!!
Some people swear by salad cream, but I have heard that it works by drowning the lice! Olive oil probably does the same thing. Never had them myself, but suddenly I am itching, LOL!
Sounds like a recipe for a salad :-))
I never realised lice could be so entertaining, maybe I'll keep them !!
~ Dave
Damn Dave thats bad news! Don't what Bill said, ''Go Surfing!!'' Thats about as natural as you can get, and you dont run the risk of damaging your hair with that harsh crap.
-Squid
Thanks Squid, I don't surf though, but I am going to try the garlic method, my workmates seem to leave the room fairly sharpish!!
cheers Dave
Hi Dave,
I personally have never had a problem with lice, even after being around others and households with lice.
I am fairly certain that this is due to my minimal use of shampoo (just enough to barely form suds - about 2x per week), and leaving a lot of my natural oil and sebum on my scalp.
Why not do a short stint with the "horrible looking chemicals" to eradicate to infestation, followed by a "natural route" regimen to prevent re-infestation?

Get a good lice comb and comb your hair carefully every day - and the kids and anyone else in the house with hair. Have some toilet roll ready on the table and after taking the comb through a strand of hair, close to the scalp, all the way down, knock it on the paper, the nasty buggers will land on it. Use the back of the comb to break their backs.
It will take at least 2 weeks on doing this every night before you get all the buggers out of your hair (bad case scenario) and the hatching eggs.
KEEP DOING IT
The chemical stuff doesnt work, eggs survive and hatch, the zapper combs dont work, the big buggers survive - they also jump as you pull them out on the comb so they may land on your clothes and make their way back to your head! They also curl up on the comb so use a safety pin to pull them out. Get rid of all fluff on the comb and make sure it's clean the next time you use it. Get seperate brushes & combs for every member of your family and dont use anyones elses. Ever.
Seriously - I'm a bloody expert (got kids too)
Check everyones head every few days, it only takes 1-2 days for an adult to start laying eggs, the eggs stick/bond to the hair and they are the culprits which everyone thinks their clear of - kids at school pass it about because parents dont know how to check or keep checking so protect yourself by always checking! Keep on top of it and you'll be fine, it just takes time, routine and patience.
