Measuring hair length using the method of starting at the front hairline and then measuring to the back, my hair is 29 inches long.
Yesterday I decided to measure a shed hair and it was 24 inches long. I found that pretty cool that an actual hair has reached a length of 2 feet and it was more satisfying than the other measurement.
What about you guys? What are some of your measurements using either method?
My Site
This is a rough measurement, but from the front hairline to the back, my hair measures 42 inches. The longest actual strand I've ever measured was 31.5 inches. That was some time ago, perhaps late last year, and since then no strand has looked long enough to bother measuring. My 6 year milestone arrives in September so I assume I'm close to, if not at, my terminal length, and don't expect to find another one longer than that.
Matt
Hi Matt,
Thanks for sharing those stats. That's interesting about the correlation between not finding a longer hair than 31.5 inches and coming up to terminal length.
Your ratio of 42:31.5 is close to what I would expect. I think I found a rare hair that put my ratio at 29:24. It must have been one from the top of my head or even near my front hairline that had managed to grow to close to the end of my hair in back.

Welcome to the 2 foot plus club Jason. With a bit of patience and luck, you may be joining the 3 foot plus club in a couple of years.
Using the LHC method, my hair measured 55 inches.
Here are the longest shed strands that I have saved. There may be some on my head a tiny bit longer that I am unaware of.
I have heard it said that grey hair does not grow as long as hair that has not lost its colour. Totally wrong. Grey hair is much coarser and stronger. The grey ones were black and coarse when I was young.
Scott
Wow, Scott, those figures are truly impressive. To find and measure a hair that's 45.25 inches is just awesome! Your ratio of 55 inches LHC method to 45.25 by shed strand is similar to Matt's. Like I said to him, I must have happened to find one of the longest hairs on my head when I came across the 24 inch one.
Now I kind of wish I saved it as 2 feet is a cool milestone. I imagine it will become easier and easier to notice when the really long ones shed from this point on. Hopefully one day I can join the 3 foot club! You're very close but I wonder if there are any men that have reached 4 feet.

Probably EdG. His hair is calf length, truly amazing. I met him at a longhair meet in SF awhile back.
Scott
Hey Scott,
A longhair meet? You'd never see anything like that in Alabama. So y'all really just get a bunch of longhairs together and hangout? Amazing, the attitudes must be vastly different out there. Cool.

It's like a whole different planet out here, Paul. We have a longhair gathering maybe once a year. Usually 6 to 10 people will show up. Some of our members will sometimes even show up while on vacation from out of state.
I found a few images from long hair meets, from the archives.

HI Jason,
Using the LHC method: ~34 inches
Longest shed strand: 26 inches
Congrats on finding your first "two-footer" among your sheds.

I just measured mine like that and I got 30 inches. And all this time I thought your hair was several inches longer than mine. LOL
I've never measured a shed hair so I have no idea there. Actually this was the first time that I had ever actually measured my hair at all, I guess I never thought it to be measure worthy.
Daniel
My longest shed strand measures in at 35.5 inches. However, my mane has been gradually getting shorter over the years (without trimming), and anything over 24 inches is rare these days.
A meager 18 inches (actual hair), dreaming of more!
Bruce
Oh, I think I need to remeasure!
22 inches!! (useing the forehead to tail method)
Yippie!
That other measurement was the length of an actual (still attached) strand.
Bruce
I measured the longest hair I shed today and it was 12inch (30 cm) pretty cool to have reached 1 foot of hair within two years!
That's 1,4 cm of growth a month :)
I tried the other method to, then my hair is 22inch (55cm) long. Natural hair growing with layers is so cool. My hair looks double as long as it really is!
If I understand right that is, I measured from my forehead to the tip of my tail.
That's correct, Vincent. You place the measuring tape at your front hairline and then run it over your head until you come to the end of your hair in back.
Congrats on reaching 12 inches! Your hair definitely grows quickly.
Just measured it and longest is 36". Still away before we catch up to Ed.G and Scott and whatever club that is!
Cheers,
John.B
Wow, John! That was a shed strand! That's impressive - you're a member of the 3 foot club!
